NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The Christopher Newport softball team, ranked 11th in the nation, finished the regular season with a flourish on Saturday, sweeping a Senior Day doubleheader at Captains Park over Frostburg State to finish with a 30-6 overall record. CNU will carry a nine-game winning streak into the Capital Athletic Conference post-season tournament and the Captains will be the top seed after finishing 13-1 in CAC play. It is the second straight season
Keith Parr's squad has won the league's regular-season title, and 2018 marks the 12th straight season the Captains have won 30 or more games.
The Captains fell behind early in the opener Saturday on a sunny and cool day at Captains Park, 3-0, but bounced back to cruise to an 11-3 triumph. The game was halted in the fifth inning due to the eight-run mercy rule when sophomore
Liz Andrews drove home the 11th run run providing the eight-run cushion. In the nightcap, the Captains let a 4-0 lead get away, and trailed the Bobcats, 5-4, before pulling even in the sixth inning. The game ended up going nine innings with CNU pulling out a 6-5 victory on an RBI grounder again off the bat of
Liz Andrews, scoring senior
Rachael Payne.
Sophomore
Aubrey Bates upped her record to 14-1 earning the win in the opener. Bates allowed three unearned runs in the top of the first but settled down to go the next four frames without allowing another run. Fellow sophomore
Laura Kate Moss sailed through the first five innings in game two without allowing a run before the Bobcats jumped ahead in the sixth. Freshman
Patty Maye Ohanian entered in the relief, and threw four scoreless innings to earn the win and improve to 4-1 for the year.
Payne, an All-American as a junior last season, enjoyed Senior Day by going seven-for-nine at the plate in the twin bill. She scored five times and drove in three runs for the Captains. Fellow senior
Leah Andrews posted a six-for-nine day with four runs scored and two runs batted in. Ohanian ended up four-for-seven with three runs scored and three RBI in addition to getting the win in game two.
Frostburg State fell to 18-14 overall and 5-7 in the CAC. The Bobcats comeback in game two was highlighted by a pinch-hit grand slam home run off the bat of Aliyah Ramey.
Five seniors were honored prior to first pitch Saturday as
Leah Andrews,
Savannah Couch,
Abby Eichelberger,
Rachael Payne, and
Morgan Wooddell were joined on the field by their families and teammates to celebrate their careers. Christopher Newport will now focus on the post season, and will host two other CAC squads (the fourth and sixth seeded teams still to be determined) beginning Friday at Captains Park as the CAC Tournament gets underway. Friday's games in the double elimination pod will be played at 12 noon, 2 p.m., and 4 p.m., with the Captains scheduled to play in the 12 p.m. game vs. the #6 seed and then again in the 4 p.m. game against the #4 seed.
CNUsports.com will have further information on the upcoming tournament as seedings are finalized by the conference office.
