NEWPORT NEWS, Va. --
The Christopher Newport women's lacrosse team will look to bounce back after a pair of setbacks against nationally-ranked foes on Wednesday at 4 p.m. when CNU hosts Southern Virginia in a Capital Athletic Conference game at Captains Turf Field.

Entering the contest, Christopher Newport sits at 7-8 overall, including 3-3 in league tilts. Meanwhile, Southern Virginia is 5-9 with an 0-6 ledger in CAC play.

For those fans unable to attend the game, live stats and a video stream of the action will be available at CNUsports.com. Direct links to both features can be found at the top of this release and on the CNU schedule page.

The Captains are coming off of a pair of losses last week at No. 10 Mary Washington and No. 7 York (Pa.). Against the Eagles on Wednesday, Christopher Newport held a 9-8 lead with 11 minutes remaining before UMW answered with six straight goals to pull away for the victory. On Saturday against the Spartans, Sarah Culver registered her 11th hat-trick of the season and Kaitlyn Ready established a personal-high with 20 saves, but YCP came away with the 21-12 triumph.

On a national level, Culver ranks 20th in the NCAA with 56 goals, while Ready is third with 180 saves. That total also stands as a new single-season program record. Meanwhile, Carly Wilson sits 10th in the country and first in the CAC with 36 assists. As a team, CNU also ranks eighth in the NCAA in fewest turnovers per contest. The Captains are averaging just 14.40 turnovers per game this season.

In addition to the national leaders, Colleen Bourgal is eighth in the CAC with 33 goals, while Julia Golden is tied for ninth with 16 caused turnovers. Ready also ranks second in the conference with 32 ground balls.

On the other side of the field, Southern Virginia comes to town on a three-game skid, including a 15-14 setback at Wesley on Friday. The Knights scored five of the final six goals in the contest to pull within one, but Lauren Thatcher's game-tying attempt with less than a minute remaining in regulation was stopped by the Wolverines. Natalie Rice finished the contest with four goals, while Caiti Knowles and Hannah King contributed hat-tricks.

Overall this season, King ranks third in the CAC with 18 caused turnovers and seventh with 52 draw controls. Rice also stands sixth in the league with 30 ground balls and seventh with 17 caused turnovers. Between the pipes, Madilyn Krauss has made 100 saves this season and sports a .402 save percentage and an 11.79 goals-against-average.

In four previous meetings between the two programs, Christopher Newport holds a pristine 4-0 record. Last year, the Captains came up with a 19-2 triumph in Buena Vista.

Following the midweek battle, CNU will return to action on Saturday at 2 p.m. when the squad wraps up its regular season slate at home against Wesley.
