FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- The Christopher Newport women's lacrosse team will take on its first of two straight top-10 opponents on Wednesday at 4 p.m. when the Captains travel to No. 10 Mary Washington for a Capital Athletic Conference tilt at the Battleground Athletic Complex.
CNU enters the midweek match-up with a 7-6 record, including a 3-1 ledger in league action. On the other side, Mary Washington sits at 11-2 overall and 4-2 in CAC play.
For those fans unable to attend the game, live stats and a video stream of the action will be available at UMWeagles.com. Direct links to both features can be found at the top of this release and on the CNU schedule page.
The Captains are coming off of a 15-8 victory over Marymount on Saturday. Celebrating Senior Day, the squad's veterans shined against the Saints.
Carly Wilson posted six points, while
Caitlin King had four and
Colleen Bourgal chipped in with three. On the defensive side, Bourgal forced two turnovers, and fellow seniors
Claire Chadwick,
Tess D'Arcy, and
Corbyn Hale helped blanket the rest of the field.
So far this season, CNU boasts league-leaders in a variety of categories. Wilson leads the CAC with 35 assists, which also stands as the sixth-highest single-season total in program history. Meanwhile,
Sarah Culver has a league-high 48 goals, and
Kaitlyn Ready leads the conference with 148 saves. That total also places her seventh in the NCAA.
On the other side, Mary Washington is coming off of a hard-fought 9-7 setback against York (Pa.). Leading 5-4 with 23 minutes left in the second half, the Eagles stumbled in the middle of the period as the Spartans strung together three consecutive man-up tallies on the way to the victory. Holly Hudson led UMW with four points, while Hanna Ashby made eight saves in 56 minutes of work.
Overall this season, Mary Washington ranks among the national leaders in several categories. The squad is seventh in the nation in free-position percentage (.573) and 16th in fewest turnovers per contest (15.00). The team also ranks 19th in shooting percentage, converting 51 percent of its attempts. Meanwhile, on an individual level, four Eagles have at least 25 goals this year. Mackenzie Maguire has a team-high 51 points, while Hudson and Allison Davis have 26 strikes apiece. Julia Albert has also posted 25 tallies and seven assists.
In 16 previous meetings between the two programs, Mary Washington holds a 15-1 edge, including a 9-6 victory in Newport News last year.
After the midweek battle, Christopher Newport will return to action on Saturday with a 1 p.m. showdown at No. 7 York (Pa.)
