ORANGE, Calif. -- The 26th-ranked Christopher Newport women's tennis team captured it's third straight win with a 7-2 victory at Chapman University on Wednesday afternoon. The Captains improved to 4-3 on the season while the Panthers fall to 1-3 on the year.
The Captains went 2-1 in doubles play and captured wins in five of the six matches during individual play.
Johanna Ranta-aho and
Isabelle Wessel came away with a pair of wins on the day to lead the Captains' efforts.
The doubles tandems at No. 2 and 3 continued their winning ways, extending streaks of four and three matches, respectively, for the Captains. Ranta-aho and
Kate Huck paired up for a team-leading sixth win at No. 2, defeating Alisa Organovich and Nicole Fouts (8-7 (5)). Wessel teamed with
Meili Konell for an 8-1 win at No. 3, taking down Madison Ross and Anna Kaplan.
In singles play, the Captains' nationally-ranked Ranta-aho pulled out a hard-fought win in the first set before pulling away for a straight set win over Isabella Oederkerk (7-6 (6), 6-4).
A quartet of seniors earned the remainder of wins for CNU as
McKinney Harwood won at No. 2 over Ross (6-4, 7-6 (8)); Wessel won at No. 4 against Fouts (6-4, 6-4);
Claire Dockrill defeated Vasilia Trofimova at No. 5 (7-6 (5), 6-3); and
Alexandra Drye secured a win over Kaplan at No. 6 (6-2, 6-2).
The third straight 7-2 win for CNU came as part of nine-match road trip to start the year. The Captains will wrap up the stretch at No. 35 Redlands on Friday, March 9 before taking on Division I Villanova on Saturday, March 10 in San Diego.
