PASADENA, Calif. -- With a doubles sweep and four wins in singles play, the 26th-ranked Christopher Newport women's tennis team improved to 3-3 with a 7-2 win over Caltech on Sunday, kicking off the annual spring break trip to California. Senior
Kate Huck and sophomore
Johanna Ranta-aho led the way with two victories, including a combined win at No. 2 doubles.
With the win, Christopher Newport improves to 3-3 with their second straight victory, while Caltech falls to 1-4 overall this season.
CNU raced out to a 3-0 lead after sweeping doubles play, including a dominant effort on the second line by Huck and Ranta-aho. The Captains' tandem improved to 4-2 in duals action this year after defeating Julia Reisler and Erin Wang (8-3).
The other wins in pairs play came from
Alexandra Drye and
McKinney Harwood at No. 1, defeating Kana Moriyama and Sarina Liu by a score of 8-5, and from
Emily Morgan and
Isabelle Wessel against Vinci Chen and Ankita Roychoudhury, 8-4.
With a big lead headed into singles play, the Captains quickly secured the team win with straight set victories at 1, 5, and 6. Huck also won at No. 3, but was forced to battle back after dropping the first set, 6-1. The CNU veteran rallied for a 6-4, 10-8 finish, improving to 3-3 on the season. Ranta-aho dispatched of Moriyama on the top line (6-4, 6-1), and also ran her overall record to 3-3 in duals.
The Captains also won at 5 and 6, where
Meili Konell downed Roychoudhury (6-2, 6-0), and
Claire Dockrill beat Chen (6-2, 6-1).
CNU will return to action on Tuesday, March 6 taking on Chapman University in Orange, Calif.
