CNU Women's Tennis Falls to No. 16 Mary Washington, 8-1, in CAC Action

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- The 26th-ranked Christopher Newport women's tennis team traveled to Fredericksburg, Va. to face No. 16 Mary Washington in Capital Athletic Conference action. The Captains suffered an 8-1 setback in the regular season battle as the Eagles improved to 10-3 overall and CNU fell to 8-4. 

The setback snapped a seven-match winning streak for the Captains. 

Sophomore Johanna Ranta-aho earned the lone win of the day for CNU, picking up a hard-fought victory at No. 1 singles over Kait Brogan. The Captains' second-year won (7-6 (3), 6-4), winning her eighth straight matchup. Ranta-aho is now 12-4 overall this season with a 9-3 mark in dual action. 

CNU had a strong showing overall, battling in tight matches nearly across the board. In doubles, CNU forced an extra game at No. 3 doubles when seniors Emily Morgan and Isabelle Wessel suffered a 9-7 loss to Brittany McBride and Danielle Mirabella.

In singles, senior Kate Huck pushed her match to a third set when she picked up a win in the first against Caroline Mosberg. Huck fell in the match 2-6, 7-5, 6-3 at No. 3 singles. Meili Konell won eight games in her loss at No. 6, playing Addie Hinton (6-3, 7-5). 

The Captains will look to bounce back against Division I George Mason University on April 7 at 9:00 am.
