No. 36 Captains Cruise By Virginia Wesleyan in Men's Tennis, 8-1

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Playing in their second match of the day, the Christopher Newport men's tennis team picked up their second win, cruising to an 8-1 win over Virginia Wesleyan University on Saturday evening. The Captains improved their overall record to 6-6 with the victory.

The Captains shuffled the lineup slightly for the nightcap, giving senior David Reed the match off and slotting the next four players up. At 5 and 6, rookies James Baron and Mitch Brody took the court in singles action.

Baron earned his first career dual victory with little issue at No. 5 singles, downing Michael Portera (6-1, 6-0). Brody needed to bounce back after dropping his second set, but managed to help CNU sweep singles play with a 6-4, 2-6, 10-7 win over nick Gunther at No.  6.

The rest of singles saw CNU cruise to four straight set victories. Justin Cerny earned his first win at No. 1 with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Paul Gladstone. Andy Mason surrendered just a pair of games in a No.2  win over Mitchell Perry (6-1, 6-1).

In doubles, CNU paired senior Justin Cerny and junior William Trang together for the first time at No. 2 doubles, and the pair captured an easy 8-1 win over Anthony Wilson and Andreas Combos. CNU also won at No. 1, where Mason and Baron paired up for an 8-2 win over Nick Gunther and Perry. The lone CNU loss came at No.3 doubles, where the Captains' duo of Dominic Lacombe and Nicholas Ruzicka suffered their first loss of the season. The setback snapped a five-match winning streak at No. 3 doubles for the pair.

CNU will now turn to conference play with a pair of Capital Athletic Conference matches at home next weekend. The Captains will host Southern  Virginia University at 9:00 am on March 24 before taking on Frostburg State at Noon.
