NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Christopher Newport men's tennis has adjusted the weekend schedule due to incoming inclement weather, but is still slated to take on two out of conference opponents on Saturday. The Captains (4-6) will first play Centre College at 11:00 am on Saturday before hosting Virginia Wesleyan University at 6:00 pm.
Expected rainfall in Newport News forced an adjustment to the match against Centre, which was originally scheduled for a Noon start.
The Captains fell to No. 36 in the nation this week after enduring losses in five of the last six matches. Four of those setbacks came at the hands of nationally-ranked competition and the fifth to a team that has now checked into the national poll. CNU will be looking to right the ship at home after concluding a four-match road trip to California last week.
CNU will host four straight matches, including the two on Saturday. Saturday morning's bout against the Colonels will be just the third matchup all-time in the series, with Centre capturing wins in the previous two head-to-head battles. On the flip side, the second match of the day will feature one of the longest standing rivalries in CNU tennis history, with the matchup against Virginia Wesleyan serving as the 59th all-time between the two programs. CNU owns a 48-10 advantage.
Junior
Nicholas Ruzicka leads the team in singles wins so far this year, pouring in 10 victories including a 7-3 mark over his last 10 matches. Senior
David Reed and sophomore
Dominic Lacombe have each added nine wins so far. In doubles play, CNU is 9-1 at No. 3 doubles, including a perfect 4-0 since Ruzicka and Lacombe started playing together in that slot.
Full scores and a recap will be available at CNUsports.com following the action.
