CNU Senior Aaron McFarland Collects D3hoops.com First Team All-Region Honors

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The postseason accolades continue to mount for Christopher Newport senior guard Aaron McFarland (Richmond, Va.), who today was announced a first team All-Mid-Atlantic Region selection by D3hoops.com. McFarland continues a streak of three straight years that CNU has earned a first team All-Region selection, joining Marcus Carter and Tim Daly in that run.

Already selected as the NABC District Player of the Year and first team All-District last week, McFarland adds his first career D3hoops.com All-Region selection to his trophy case. He is the sixth player since 2012 to earn All-Region accolades from the national media entity, including the fourth to earn first team accolades. In addition to the All-Region plaudits, McFarland was invited to participate in the NABC Reese's Division III All-Star Game in Salem this Saturday.

McFarland was one of only two Capital Athletic Conference selections to the 2017-18 D3hoops.com All-Mid-Atlantic Region squad, but he and Dalton Myers (York (Pa.)) were each pegged as first team selections.

Saving his finest year for last, McFarland put together a sensational senior season that saw him become the first player since 2012 to eclipse 500 points in a single season. Named the Conference Player of the Year after helping the Captains secure the league's regular season title, McFarland ranked second in the CAC in both scoring (17.9 ppg) and three-pointers (2.8 per game). He shot nearly 45% from the field and 39% from long range while posting one of the finest performances from the free-throw line all-time at CNU, knocking down 87.2% of his 125 attempts. That mark was second only to his own record set two years ago when he knocked down 87.9% during his sophomore year.

This season, he finished in double figures in all but two games played, including a career-high 35 points in the CAC semifinals against Mary Washington. In that game, he set a new program record for the most free-throws made in a game without a miss by going 16-for-16 from the charity stripe. He scored over 20 points eleven times during the year, including a 24-point effort against Lancaster Bible College in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

He added a career best effort on the glass, hauling in 147 rebounds for an average of 5.7 per game. He also dished 43 assists and tied for the team lead with 28 steals during the year. .

The three-time All-Conference selection concluded his career as one of the all-time leading scorers in program history. He climbed to ninth on the all-time scoring list with 1,552 career points. Along the way he also set the program record for three-pointers in a career, with 266, and shattered the career free-throw shooting percentage mark, with an 85.8% clip from the line. The Captains previous program record for free-throw shooting was held by Hall of Famer Davon Barton at 77.4%.

He was a part of the most successful senior class in program history, recording a 99-20 record over four seasons and advancing to the Final Four, Sweet 16, and second round of the NCAA Tournament.

The Captains wrapped up his senior campaign with his third straight NCAA Tournament appearance and an overall record of 22-7.
