NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- In a battle of regionally-ranked opponents in the Atlantic South, the Christopher Newport women's tennis team captured a 7-2 win at Swarthmore College on Sunday afternoon. The Captains, ranked 7th in the region, improved to 2-3 on the season with the victory over the 8th-ranked Garnet.
The Captains swept doubles play and won four matches in singles for their first win of the spring schedule. All four singles victors were also part of winning tandems in doubles play.
CNU sophomore
Johanna Ranta-aho won at No. 2 doubles with
Kate Huck, 8-3, over Shirline Wee and Audrey Haring. She then went on to earn a straight set victory on the top singles line, downing Wee by a final score of 6-2, 6-0.
Senior
McKinney Harwood grabbed wins at 1 doubles and 2 singles, pairing with
Alexandra Drye for an 8-4 win in doubles before slipping by Julia Gokhberg during individual play, 7-5, 6-3. Drye was also a two-match winner on Sunday, moving up to 5 singles to win over Anna Scheibmeir, 6-3, 7-5.
Finally,
Isabelle Wessel captured a 6-1, 6-4 win over Arya Jemal at No. 4 singles after also capturing a win at 3 doubles with senior
Emily Morgan, 8-6. The Captains' No. 3 tandem defeated Rachel Bronkema and Arya Jemal.
With the loss, Swarthmore fell to 0-2 after starting their season this weekend. The Captains will now turn it's attention to their annual spring break trip to California next week. CNU will take on Caltech on March 4 at 1:00 pm in their first match in the Golden State.
