SWARTHMORE, Pa. -- Taking on a nationally-ranked New York University program on the neutral site courts at Swarthmore College, the Christopher Newport women's tennis team suffered a 6-3 setback after an arduous eight-hour match. All nine bouts were closely contested, with CNU capturing two doubles victories and one in singles.
The Captains took a 2-1 lead after doubles after outlasting the Violets in tandem play at No. 2 and 3. NYU captured an 8-3 victory on the top line, but CNU bounced back with an 8-5 win at No. 2 and a thrilling 9-7 victory at No. 3.
Taking on Anna Maria Buraya and Coco Kulle, a pair of nationally ranked singles players, the Captains' duo at No. 2 of
Johanna Ranta-aho and
Kate Huck pulled away late for an 8-5 win. At No. 3,
Emily Morgan and
Isabelle Wessel took down Rupa Ganesh and Judy Kam.
In singles action, five of the six matches went to a third and deciding set as the match was hotly contested throughout.
Kate Huck won her match to grab CNU's lone singles point against Flyora Shiyanova (7-6, 3-6, 6-2). Wessel and
Claire Dockrill each were narrowly dispatched at five and six, respectively. Wessel against Judy Kam (6-2, 4-6, 7-5) and Dockrill by Ganesh (4-6, 6-4, 7-5).
In a battle of nationally-ranked singles players, CNU sophomore
Johanna Ranta-aho, ranked No. 49 in the country, more than held her own against top-25 foe Buraya. CNU's second-year dropped the individual match (6-2, 5-7, 6-1).
The Captains will turn focus to the host Swarthmore Garnet on Sunday with another 11:00 am match on the road.
