VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. --
The Christopher Newport women's lacrosse team will face its first road test of the season on Saturday at 1 p.m. when the Captains travel to Virginia Wesleyan for a non-conference battle at Birdsong Field.

CNU enters the weekend match-up at 0-1, while the Marlins sit at 1-0. For those fans unable to attend the game, Virginia Wesleyan will provide live stats at VWUathletics.com. A direct link can be found at the top of this release and on the CNU schedule page.

Christopher Newport is looking to bounce back after a hard-fought 14-13 overtime setback against Bridgewater on Wednesday. In the season opener, Catie Chess registered a game-high six points, including four goals. Colleen Bourgal also struck three times, while Carly Wilson handed out three assists. Defensively, four Captains forced at least a pair of turnovers, including Wilson and Taylor Walker, who also secured two ground balls apiece.

Along with her offensive efforts against the Eagles, Chess contributed seven draw controls, while Jordan Hayes and Caroline Kurtz added three apiece.

With her free-position goal in the second half on Wednesday, Chess also converted her 11th straight eight-meter shot dating back to March 25, 2017. That run is currently tied for the all-time program record, equaling Meaghan Galvin's streak of 11 straight conversions from February 27 - April 1, 2016.

On the other side of the field, Virginia Wesleyan recorded an 18-7 win at Greensboro to kick off the year on February 16. Ashley Campos led the Marlins with six goals in the opener, while Avery Frangelli contributed a hat-trick as well. On the defensive side, Jordan Moilanen earned the victory after making 16 saves for VWU, while Jordan Callahan caused a pair of turnovers to go along with two ground balls, two draw controls, and two points.

Saturday's battle will mark the 18th all-time meeting between the two programs. Christopher Newport currently holds a 10-7 edge in the series, including an 18-2 triumph last year. During the 2017 match-up, Sarah Culver led CNU with three goals, while Kaitlyn Ready earned the win with five saves in the crease.

Following this weekend's contest, Christopher Newport will return to action on February 27 for a 5 p.m. tilt at Shenandoah.
