LEXINGTON, Va. -- Senior
Isabelle Wessel won for the nationally-ranked Christopher Newport women's tennis team, but the team was unable to topple 12th-ranked Washington & Lee on the road Sunday afternoon, as the Generals dropped CNU, 8-1. The Captains opened the spring schedule with the setback at the Duchossois Tennis Center.
Washington & Lee improved to 3-0 while the 26th-ranked Captains fall to 1-2 overall this season.
Wessel picked up the Captains' lone point at No. 6 singles when she dropped Lauren Hassell (6-4, 7-5) to pick up her first singles win of the season. On the top line, CNU sophomore
Johanna Ranta-aho raced out to a 6-1 win in the first set against Michelle Fleenor, but the Generals' top player bounced back for a 6-4 win in the second set. Fleenor then squeaked out the win over Ranta-aho with a 10-8 win in the third.
In doubles play, Christopher Newport got strong performances from each pairing, led by Ranta-aho and
Kate Huck at No. 2. The CNU tandem was edged, 8-6, by W&L's second pairing of Lily Horsley and Valerie Marshall. At No. 3, Wessel and
Emily Morgan suffered an 8-5 setback to Emily Kochard and Anna Kreynin.
The Captains will stay on the road next weekend as they face off against NYU in a neutral site match at Swarthmore College before taking on the host Garnet the following day. CNU faces NYU on Saturday, February 24 at 11:00 am.
