Gillis, Pokorny Named United Soccer Coaches Scholar All-Region First Team Selections

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The United Soccer Coaches announced the 2018 NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Scholar All-South Region teams on Monday morning, listing a pair of Christopher Newport Captains among those honored as first-team selections. Senior Gabby Gillis earned first team Scholar All-Region honors for the second time and junior Carson Pokorny collected her first career designation.

The United Soccer Coaches, formerly known as the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA), honored the Captains' duo in the South Region. To be eligible, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.30 cumulative GPA while also starting more than 50 percent of games as an elite player as supported by playing honors or contributions to the success of her team.

Gillis continues to add to her impressive list of postseason accolades throughout her career as the two-time All-American wrapped up her career with the finest season of her tenure. The senior midfielder from Leesburg, Va. notched career bests in every statistical category while leading the Captains to their third straight conference title, most wins in program history, and first ever national semifinals appearance. Gillis scored 41 points on 15 goals and 11 assists and hauled in her second straight conference Player of the Year designation.

Off the field, Gillis has posted a 3.63 cumulative grade-point average while majoring in Psychology and Sociology. A three-time Academic All-Conference selection, Gillis has impressed both on and off the field throughout her career.

Joining the senior midfielder on the first team Scholar All-South Region squad was Pokorny, who also added to her growing list of personal awards. The NCAA Elite 90 award winner this year for NCAA Division III Women's Soccer, Pokorny collected her first career Scholar All-Region recognition. Carrying a 4.00 cumulative GPA while majoring in Biochemistry, Pokorny won the Elite 90 award with the highest GPA among players at the national championship site. The Honors student is also double minoring in Spanish and Biology and is a two-time first team CoSIDA Academic All-District selection.

Pokorny was an impact player offensively this season, ranking fourth with 19 points on seven goals and five assists. She helped the Captains break a program record for scoring in a season while moving up to second all-time in career assists.

This season, Christopher Newport went 21-2-0 overall breaking the program record for wins in a season. CNU won the program's third straight CAC Championship and also captured the program's first ever NCAA Regional Championship, advancing to the final four for the first time in program history.

The United Soccer Coaches will announce the Scholar All-American awards later in the day.
