FROSTBURG, Md. -- A balanced scoring effort and another suffocating defensive performance led the way for the Christopher Newport women's basketball team on Saturday night, taking care of Mount Aloysius by a final score of 66-39 in the 2018 Jim Crawley Classic hosted by Frostburg State University. CNU forced 36 turnovers and grabbed 26 steals in the contest, holding the Mounties to just 39 total points.
CNU scored 38 points off of turnovers in the game, and notched 18 points on the fast break, many off of those takeaways. The defense held Mount Aloysius to just 13 first-half points, carrying a 34-13 lead into the locker room.
The offense was balanced up and down the scoresheet, with rookies
Julia Hobbs and
Phylicia McInnis leading the way with junior
Kiana Kirkland. The trio each had nine points in a game that saw 12 different players register at least one made field goal for the Captains.
CNU also dominated the glass, with a 43-28 advantage in rebounding led by senior
Jessica Daguilh. Daguilh hauled in eight rebounds, including six on the offensive glass.
Madison Howdyshell added six boards, while Hobbs grabbed four.
The CNU bench did the bulk of the damage, scoring 50 points on 22-of-50 shooting for a percentage of 44%. The reserves also snagged 14 of the Captains 26 steals, led by a game-high five thefts from rookie
Sondra Fan.
Camryn Wichelns also added four steals in just eight minutes of action, while Howdyshell and Kirkland each added four as well.
The Captains will turn around and play again on Sunday, facing the City College of New York (1-1) at 1:00 pm. The Beavers suffered a 67-44 setback against Frostburg State in Saturday's opening round of the Jim Crawley Classic.
