Captains Flirt With Century Mark Improving to 4-0 After 96-46 Win Over CCNY In Jim Crawley Classic

FROSTBURG, Md. -- Christopher Newport improved to 4-0 on the season with a dominant 50-point win over the City College of New York (CCNY) on Sunday afternoon, outscoring the Beavers, 96-46. CCNY fell to 1-2 on the year after all 15 CNU players scored in the contest and the Captains defense again forced 30+ turnovers.

Rookie Phylicia McInnis led the Captains in scoring with 13 points on 4-of-6 shooting, earning a spot on the Jim Crawley Classic All-Tournament Team. She wrapped up the two-day tournament leading the team in points in both wins, finishing with an average of 11.0 points on 8-of 13 shooting from the floor. She buried all three triples she shot on the weekend.

McInnis was one of four CNU players in double figures as the Captains put together their finest offensive performance of the young season. Christopher Newport scored 96 points on 36-of-82 shooting for a percentage of 43.9% from the floor. The Captains knocked down nine three-pointers and went 15-of-19 from the free-throw line.

The dominating performance extended to the rebounding column as well, as Christopher Newport out-rebounded the Beavers by a final count of 52-34, led by rookie Natalie Terwilliger. The freshman had another exceptional performance, hauling in her second career double-double in just her fourth game. She scored 12 points and grabbed 13 rebounds in just 15 minutes of action.

On the defensive end, senior Madison Howdyshell had a career effort with seven steals, leading a team performance that saw the Captains grab 21 as a team. CNU has forced 30+ turnovers in each of their first four games as CCNY registered 31 turnovers in the contest against the stifling CNU defense. It was also the best half-court defense for the Captains, who held CCNY to just 25% shooting on 12-of-48 attempts from the field.

The constant rotation for head coach Bill Broderick saw not one player log 20 minutes of action in the contest as the well-balanced performance led to a wire-to-wire victory. Bailey Hodges, who dished out a team-high five assists, was the only player over 17 minutes in the game as all 15 players dressed for the game played at least six minutes of action.

McIninis (13) and Terwilliger (12) led the scoring while junior Kiana Kirkland (11) and rookie Jessica Foster (11) also added double-figure scoring performances. Freshman Julia Ng was 4-for-5 from the floor for eight points while Sondra Fan and Marlise Brunson each had four assists for the Captains.

CNU improved to 4-0 for the third straight season and the fourth time in seven seasons under coach Broderick. It is just the 10th time in program history the Captains have won their first four games of the season.

Christopher Newport is now off for a week for the Thanksgiving holiday before they return to action next Sunday, November 25 against Meredith College. That contest will be played at the Freeman Center at 2:00 pm as part of a triple-header with the men's basketball tournament. Live stats and video will be available at CNUsports.com.
