BUENA VISTA, Va. -- The Christopher Newport men's soccer team will look to bounce back after their first conference loss on Saturday with another road game on Wednesday, traveling to face Southern Virginia University at 7:00 pm. The Captains (5-5-0, 1-1-0) will take on the Knights (1-12-0, 0-2-0), still looking for their first Division III win of the season.
CNU opened conference play with a 1-0 double-overtime victory against Penn State Harrisburg, but last weekend suffered a loss at Frostburg State University by the same final score after the Bobcats walked off with a goal in the final 1:15 of action. The up-and-down season has seen CNU start the year with a 5-5 overall record, with all five setbacks coming by one goal.
In five previous matchups in the all-time series, the Captains have never lost, owning a 5-0-0 record over the Knights. Last season, the Captains put together one of it's most lopsided victories in program history with an 11-0 win at home.
The Captains have seen 11 different players score goals this season, with
Stephen Durbin and
Jordan Boone leading the attack with four goals apiece. Durbin has added three assists for 11 points, while Boone has also chipped in two assists for 10 total points.
CNU is currently locked in a three-way tie for fourth in the league with three points, but no team in the league has won two games and the leaders only have four points in the standings with 1-0-1 records. The standings are wide open with five games left to play, and all eight teams will earn a spot in this year's CAC postseason.
Southern Virginia has been shut out 10 times this season, including in four straight games coming into Wednesday's tilt. The Knights have just one win, with a 2-0 victory over Regent on September 27. Rookie Zach Martin has started atop the Knights' offense in all 13 games and leads the way with two goals and one assist for five points.
Following Wednesday's matchup, the Captains will return home Saturday, October 13 for Senior Night as they host York College of Pennsylvania at 7:00 pm.
