Top-Seeded CNU Women's Soccer Hosts Southern Virginia in CAC Tournament First Round Saturday

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The quest for a third straight Capital Athletic Conference women's soccer championship begins for the nationally-ranked Christopher Newport Captains on Saturday, as top-seeded CNU hosts #8-seed Southern Virginia at 6:00 pm.

The Captains capped their second consecutive perfect regular season in CAC action and secured the top seed in this week's conference tournament after a 4-1 win at St. Mary's (Md.) on Wednesday. CNU is now 14-1-0 overall and will host the Knights, coming into the match with a 4-12-0 record.

Admission to Captains Field for the game is $5 for adults and $3 for children. CNU students will be admitted free with a valid ID. For fans who cannot attend the game, a live video webcast and live stats will be available at CNUsports.com.

Saturday's matchup will be the first ever between the two teams in the postseason, as CNU owns a 7-0-0 advantage in the all-time series. Earlier this season, the Captains won, 5-0, in a home game against the Knights highlighted by a hat trick from senior Gabby Gillis

Gillis has helped lead the dangerous CNU attack all season long, ranking second on the team with 34 points on 14 goals and 6 assists. The senior midfielder has played over 1,000 minutes in 15 games and has been deadly accurate with her shot this season, putting 38 of her 58 attempts (65.5%) on frame. Sophomore Riley Cook is the league's leading scorer, with 40 points on 17 goals and 6 assists, while sophomore Maxine Borris also leads the league in assists, with 10. Borris' 10 helpers are tied for fourth for a single season in program history.

Southern Virginia enters the contest on an eight-game skid. Senior forward Jamilla Anderson leads the team with six goals for 12 points, while sophomores Kylie Auger and McCall Jensen have each added eight apiece, with three goals and 2 assists.

Following the action on Saturday, the winning team will advance to play the winner of the $4-Frostburg State vs. #5-Salisbury matchup on Wednesday, October 31 in the CAC semifinals.
