ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. -- Capping another dominating season in the Capital Athletic Conference, the nationally-ranked Christopher Newport women's soccer team finished out it's second consecutive perfect run through the conference schedule on Wednesday afternoon, with a 4-1 win at St. Mary's (Md.). Four different players scored for the potent Captains lineup, including another history-making tally for CNU sophomore
Riley Cook.
Cook notched her 17th goal of the season, running her league-leading scoring total to 40 points and becoming just the second Captain in program history to eclipse the 40-point plateau. Cook now tops the freshman and sophomore scoring list at CNU and has scored more points than player in her first two seasons.
Sophomore
Maxine Borris also became a chart-topper after Wednesday's matchup, picking up an assist in her fifth straight game to set a new standard for CNU women's soccer.
The individual accolades continue to grow this season as the Captains' success as a team is also setting unprecedented marks. CNU is now 14-1-0 overall with a 7-0-0 mark against league foes. The Captains have won 18 straight conference games and are unbeaten in 33 straight (32-0-1) since the first CAC game of 2015, setting a new program record for consecutive games without a loss.
In Wednesday's game, the Captains opened the scoring in the 10th minute when rookie
Abby Harrigan slotted a pass to senior
Gabby Gillis. Gillis notched her 14th goal of the season with the score, which would hold up as the only scoring in the first half.
CNU would outshoot the home team, 22-1, in the first 45 minutes, but could not cash in on any more scoring strikes until after halftime.
Less than two minutes into the second half, the Seahawks scored the game-tying goal on just their second shot of the game when Jenna Pastel found Alex Moody for the score. Quickly, CNU responded and re-took the lead with what would hold up as the eventual game-winning goal off the foot of
Carson Pokorny. Madison Cochran crossed a pass into the box for Pokorny, who converted for the score just 3:04 into the second stanza. Pokorny's sixth goal of the season would be her second game-winning tally.
CNU continued to pressure the St. Mary's defense, putting 14 more shots in the book to outshoot the Seahawks, 36-2, in the contest. In the 72nd minute, Cook netted her historical 17th goal, off the second assist of the day for Harrigan. She joins Sam Ciaravino, with a record 43 points in 2010, as the only players in program history to reach 40 points in a single seasono. Then, with just under 11 minutes left in regulation, Borris assisted on rookie
Kristina Toms' fifth goal of the season to wrap up the scoring.
The Captains defense matched their season best performance when they held St. Mary's to a season-low two shots in the contest. It is the third time this season the CNU defense, anchored by juniors
Shaye Doherty,
Keiley McCarthy, and junior
Lulu Manley, held their opponent to just two attempts from the field.
CNU will look to carry the regular season momentum into the postseason on Saturday when they will host #8-seed Southern Virginia University in the CAC Tournament First Round. The Captains will kickoff against the Knights at 6:00 pm on Saturday, October 27 to begin their quest at a third straight conference crown.
