NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Following the same script they used throughout the regular season, the nationally-ranked Christopher Newport women's soccer team wrote their way into the Capital Athletic Conference Semifinals with a 2-0 win at home over 8th-seeded Southern Virginia University on Saturday night.
The Captains (15-1-0) won their 10th straight game overall while the Knights (4-13-0) dropped their ninth straight. CNU will advance to host #5-seed Salisbury in Wednesday night's semifinal round at Captains Field.
Playing on Captains Turf Field due to a wet track on their usual surface, the dangerous attack took some time figuring out the alternative soccer facility. CNU was held scoreless in the first half for the first time since September 29, a stretch of nine games. Despite the 0-0 score at halftime, the Captains turned to their season leaders to capture the win in the second half.
Early in the second stanza, scoring leaders
Gabby Gillis and
Riley Cook connected for the eventual game-winning goal. In the 56th minute, a CNU player headed the ball toward the goal, but a Knights defender attempted to clear out of the zone. Her clear attempt was mis-hit and Gillis volleyed a pass to Cook, who hammered home the shot for the first goal of the match.
With the score, Cook notched her 18th goal of the season, and her eighth game-winning strike. She ranked third nationally in winners prior to Saturday's contest.
The second goal of the game was beautifully played by sophomore
Maxine Borris, who started the play around midfield. After receiving a pass from
Sabrina Gillis near the sideline, Borris used the outside of her right foot to send the ball by her defender and into the corner. She raced to the ball, by another defender, and lofted a picture-perfect cross into the box, where GIllis was ready to finish for the Captains.
The assist was Borris' league-leading 11th helper of the year, moving her into fourth all-time at CNU for a single season. She trails only Carly Utterback (2012) and
Carson Pokorny (2017) with 13, and Victoria Perry (2016) with 12. On the receiving end, Gillis notched her 15th goal of the year and set a new career high for scoring with 37 points on the year.
CNU outshot the Knights, 25-2, including a 9-0 advantage in shots on-goal. The Captains were whistled offsides eight times, including once that negated a goal scored in the first half by
Riley Cook.
Cook extended her record-breaking scoring streak to 10 games, becoming the first player in program history to notch a point in at least 10 straight games. She has a goal in five straight contests, ranking second all-time. Borris has also registered an assist in seven straight games, obliterating the previous mark set at four in 2000 by Amy Petko.
The Captains will take on the Sea Gulls in the CAC Semifinals with a championship berth on the line this Wednesday. Salisbury and CNU played on October 17 with the Captains earning a 2-0 win at home.
