CNU Women's Soccer Continues to Rise in National Rankings; Closes Regular Season Wednesday on the Road

ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. -- After another dominating week in conference play, the Christopher Newport women's soccer team shot back into the top 15 nationally ahead of their final regular season game of the season on Wednesday. Kickoff at St. Mary's College of Maryland is set for 3:30 pm as the Captains look to close out the CAC season riding an eight-game winning streak.

The United Soccer Coaches moved CNU up seven spots to 15th and D3soccer.com moved the Captains up one spot to 12th. The Captains have been nationally-ranked all season long, winning 13 of their first 14 games including a perfect 6-0-0 start in conference play.

St. Mary's will provide a live video webcast and live stats of the action from Maryland on Wednesday afternoon. The Seahawks come into the contest battling for positioning in the CAC Tournament, currently tied for fifth with a 7-9-1 overall record and 2-3-1 mark in conference play. Postseason seeding and home field advantage will be decided with Wednesday's results for seeds 3-7.

The Captains will look to close out it's third straight unbeaten seasson in conference play after going 8-0-1 in 2016 and 9-0-0 in 2017. CNU has continued to dominate the regular season in league play, outscoring opponents 22-3 this season en route to the team's sixth straight regular season crown. Christopher Newport has won 17 straight conference games and are in the middle of a record-breaking 32-match unbeaten streak against league opponents.

Leading the way this season is sophomore and three-time defending conference player of the week Riley Cook. The league's leading scorer, Cook ranks 18th nationally in points per game and has 38 points this season, ranking third all-time at CNU for a single season. Cook also ranks tied for third nationally in game-winning goals, putting away seven winners this season. Senior All-American Gabby Gillis is second in the CAC in scoring with 32 points on 13 goals and 6 assists, while adding three game-winning goals of her own. The CNU offense has been red-hot all season, outscoring opponents 49-8 in 14 games for an average of 3.50 goals per game.

Defensively, CNU has been equally as impressive, allowing just eight goals for a 0.57 goals-against average. Sophomore goalkeeper Haley Eiser has been named the Defensive Player of the Week twice, including this week after a shutout win over Salisbury last week. Eiser has four solo shutouts and two more combined efforts while leading the league in save percentage (.833) and goals-against average (0.67).

St. Mary's will look to spoil the Captains' perfect regular season in CAC action after suffering a 2-0 loss to Penn State Harrisburg in their last game. Prior to that contest, the Seahawks played a scoreless draw with Frostburg State and won, 2-1, on the road at York (Pa.). The offense has scored just 16 goals in 17 games this season, led by sophomore Alex Moody with four goals and an assist for 9 points. Only three St. Mary's players have registered more than one goal this season. In goal, veteran Katie Flores has started 13 of St. Mary's 17 games with a .790 save percentage, while sophomore Ellie Marts has saved 95.2% of attempts in her 386 minutes for a 0.23 goals-against average.

Following the regular season finale, the Captains will prepare to begin defense of their conference championship with a first round matchup at home against 8-seed Southern Virginia University on Saturday, October 27 at 6:00 pm.
