NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The 14th-ranked Christopher Newport field hockey team will kick off a busy weekend on Saturday at 11 a.m. when the Captains host Frostburg State during a Capital Athletic Conference clash on Senior Day at Captains Turf Field.
Â
Following Saturday's contest against the Bobcats, the Captains will have a quick turnaround as the squad travels to Catholic for a 3 p.m. showdown on Sunday at 3 p.m.
Â
Entering the weekend, Christopher Newport currently sits at 9-4 on the season, including 2-1 against league foes. Frostburg State is 2-13 overall and 0-3 in CAC play, while Catholic boasts a 6-7 ledger entering a game against Moravian on Saturday.
Along with Senior Day, Saturday's contest will also serve as CNU's annual Play for CHKD Day. Spectator admission for Saturday is $5 for adults and $3 for children and students. All participants (in uniform) and coaches who will take part in the youth Play Day after the game will be admitted free of charge. All proceeds from the game will benefit The Children's Hospital of the King's Daughters.
Â
For those fans unable to attend the games this weekend, live stats and a video stream of both contests will be available. Direct links can be found at the top of this release and on the CNU schedule page.
Â
Prior to Saturday's game, Christopher Newport will honor the three senior members of the 2018 squad. Together,
Rachael Allshouse,
Courtnie Greene, and
Brittan Muir have anchored a tremendous run since 2015. During their time in Newport News, the Captains have spent 31 weeks ranked in the NFHCA National Coaches Poll, including a stint at No. 4 during the 2017 campaign. Along the way, the team has compiled a 53-15 record and claimed the program's first-ever Capital Athletic Conference Championship last season.
Â
Earning recognition for their work, the three seniors have combined to claim 21 postseason honors, including six All-Region awards and a pair of All-American plaudits. Additionally, Greene was celebrated as the VaSID All-State Player of the Year in 2017, Muir stands as the first Captain to earn All-League honors during each of her first three seasons, and Allshouse became just the fourth player in program history to pick up first-team All-American accolades for her work last year.
Â
Frostburg State enters Saturday on a three-game skid, including a double-overtime setback at McDaniel on Wednesday. Despite the stumble, Sierra Smizer has been strong between the pipes. The goalkeeper ranks first in the CAC and 14th in the NCAA with 121 saves, including 25 against Salisbury earlier this month. Equally effective on the back end, Emy Nelson has five defensive saves, while Sam Coffey has anchored the offense with 14 points and six goals.
Â
Catholic comes into the weekend following a 2-0 setback at No. 19 Ursinus on Tuesday. Facing a challenging schedule in 2018, five of the program's seven losses have come against teams currently listed in the NFHCA National Coaches Poll, including three squads in the top-five. Effective on the back line, the Cardinals rank seventh in the NCAA with 16 defensive saves, including 11 by Nicole Tsiaras. Offensively, Hannah Schied and Meghan Shallow both have four goals.
Â
Christopher Newport is 14-1 all-time against Frostburg State and 9-6 in battles against Catholic. The Captains topped the Bobcats, 8-0, last year, while the Cardinals defeated CNU, 2-1, in 2017.
