Dangerous Captains Offense Leads No. 25 CNU Women's Soccer to 4-0 Win Over York (Pa.) in CAC Action

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Scoring multiple goals in a game for the sixth straight game and 11th time in 12 total games this season, the dangerous Christopher Newport offense led the Captains to another conference win on Saturday, 4-0 over the York College (Pa.) Spartans. CNU improved to 11-1-0 overall and 4-0-0 in league play while dropping the Spartans to 6-8-0, 2-2-0.

Four different Captains got into the scoring in the contest, including the league-leading 12th goal of the year for Riley Cook to kickstart the offense. Scoring at least one point in six straight games, Cook has now factored into five of the last six game-winning goals with either an assist or goal. The first goal of the match came in the ninth minute of action when Maxine Borris worked by her defender on the right side and lofted a perfect cross to the back post, where Cook was home to head in the score.

The goal would hold up as the game-winning strike for Cook's sixth of the season and 11th career winner. She moved into a tie for fourth all-time in career game-winning goals and currently ranks in the nation's top ten for this season. The assist was also Borris' league-leading seventh helper of the season.

CNU would score again in the first half in the 38th minute on Kristina Toms' third goal of the week. After Kayla Locklear saved the ball from going out on the sideline, she turned toward the goal line and crossed a pass into the box. Just over the outstretched hands of the Spartans goalkeeper, the ball found Toms' foot and ricocheted off the left post into the goal. The rookie scored in all three of CNU's games this week and now ranks tied for fourth on the team with seven points scored.

The Captains carried a 2-0 lead into the second half but would double that total by the end of the game. Sophomore defender Lulu Manley converted on her first career goal in the 65th minute of play when she connected from distance on a set piece. With the ball set up about 45 yards away from the goal, the second-year center back smashed a long attempt into the box, and watched as the ball scooted into the back of the net as the goalkeeper was unable to get a hand on the shot.

Finally, with less than a minute to play, rookie Hailey Price carved through the York defense before converting on the final goal of the match. Price got the ball near the sideline before getting by three defenders before ripping a hard right-footed shot into the left side of the goal. She scored her third goal of the season and was the fourth different player to tickle the twine against the Spartans. CNU has now outscored their opponents, 21-2, in their current six-game winning streak.

With the goal, Riley Cook has now scored 30 points on the year, becoming just the second player in program history to score 30 points in each of her first two seasons (Emily Renkin 2004-05). She is one of only four players ever to notch multiple 30-point seasons (Laura McFerrin, Emily Renkin, Victoria Perry).

The defense also pitched another shutout for their third straight clean sheet. Sophomore Haley Eiser earned the clean sheet with a season-high six saves against the Spartans. It was the sixth shutout of the season for the Captains, who now own a 0.58 goals-against average as a team.

Christopher Newport will be back in action with their final home regular season game of the year on Wednesday, October 17 against Salisbury University (5-7-1, 2-2-0). Kickoff from Captains Field is scheduled for 7:00 pm against the Sea Gulls.
