NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The CNU women's soccer team saw their win streak improve to seven games as they closed out a perfect regular season in home games on Wednesday night with a 2-0 win over Salisbury University (5-8-1, 2-3-0) in Capital Athletic Conference action. The Captains improved to 12-1-0 overall and 5-0-0 in league action while also extending their multi-goal streak to seven straight games.
Christopher Newport took an early lead in the conference game when sophomore
Maddie Cochran scored a sensational goal in the seventh minute of action. The goal was built from the middle of the field when rookie
Abby Harrigan slipped a pass toward the top of the box for senior
Gabby Gillis. Gillis turned and touched a pass to Cochran who ripped a laser into the bottom half of the crossbar and into the goal. It was her third goal of the season and held up as the game-winning goal for her first of the year.
With an early lead, the Captains offense continued to challenge the Salisbury goalkeeper, rookie Regan Benton with five more shots on-goal in the first half. Sophomore
Riley Cook took a pair of shots and Cochran added another shot on frame in the first 20 minutes of action. CNU outshot the Sea Gulls, 10-4, in the first half, and that pressure only increased in the second stanza. CNU added another 16 shots after halftime, including the second goal of the contest.
Salisbury managed just six shots on-goal in the game, but their best chance came after weathering CNU's pressure for nearly 75 minutes and holding on for just a one-goal deficit. On a counter attack, the Sea Gulls found an open player on a through ball that left leading scorer, Julianna Boller, open for a one-on-one attempt against CNU sophomore
Haley Eiser. Boller's shot was stopped by Eiser, but the ricochet landed at the feet of Megan Brady, who put a second shot on the open goal for a possible equalizer. The Captains defense raced back in time, and cleared the ball off the line before it had a chance to go in, and CNU escaped the threat.
Just minutes later, the Captains cashed in on the insurance goal when leading scorer
Riley Cook converted on her 13th goal of the season. The league's leader in assists,
Maxine Borris, started the play by getting past her defender on the right side of the field. She crossed a pass into the box where junior
Carson Pokorny touched the ball back to Cook in the box. The sophomore forward laced a line drive into the left side of the goal. The score extended her point-scoring streak to seven games, which is tied for the fifth best roll in program history.
CNU has two more regular season contests against league opponents before starting the postseason at home in the Capital Athletic Conference Tournament. Next up is a battle for first place as the Captains travel to Mary Washington (9-2-1, 5-0-0) to break a tie for the top of the CAC standings. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 pm in Fredericksburg, Va. this Saturday, October 20. Live stats and video will be available at CNUsports.com.
