OBERLIN, Ohio -- After opening the 2017 campaign with a pair of victories at home, the Christopher Newport field hockey team will face its first road tests of the season this weekend as the Captains head to Ohio for non-conference battles at Oberlin on Friday and Kenyon on Sunday.
Â
The trip begins with a 5 p.m. tilt against Oberlin at the Austin E. Knowlton Athletics Complex on Friday. Sunday's showdown with Kenyon is scheduled for 11 a.m. at McBride Field in Gambier, Ohio.
Â
For those fans unable to make the trip, Oberlin and Kenyon will provide live stats and video streams of the action. Direct links to both features can be found at the top of this release and on the CNU schedule page.
Â
Entering Friday's competition, Christopher Newport sits at 2-0 on the season, while Oberlin is 1-2 overall. Meanwhile, Kenyon is a pristine 3-0 and will square off with Washington & Lee on Saturday before hosting the Captains on Sunday morning.
Â
Through the first week of the season, CNU has already put its youth on full display as several freshmen have already made significant contributions. First-year standout
Lily Bryngelson boasts a team-high seven points and became just the fifth freshman in program history to score a pair of goals in her collegiate debut. She was also featured in the CAC's "Plays of the Week" for her strike against DePauw on Sunday.
Â
Along with Bryngelson, fellow first-year stars
Jackie Kotoriy and
Courtney Fiest have collected three points apiece. Headlining the veteran contingent,
Rachael Allshouse and
Madison Doss have each scored twice as well.
Â
Equally stingy on the defensive side, Christopher Newport kicked off the year with back-to-back shutouts for just the third time in program history.
Stephanie McKinney has been flawless during her 105 minutes of work between the pipes, while
Brittan Muir and
Mackenzie Neylon have chipped in with defensive saves. Muir was celebrated as the CAC Defensive Player of the Week for her efforts during the squad's season-opening victories.
Â
Squaring off against the Captains, Oberlin has been blanked by its last two opponents after kicking off the season with a 5-2 triumph over Lindenwood. Amelia Huang has gotten off to a solid start for the Yeowomen with four points, including a pair of assists, while Reet Goraya and Jenna Gyimesi have three points apiece as well. On the defensive side, Kennedy Kline has anchored the team in goal, playing all 210 minutes while registering a .649 save percentage and a 4.33 goals-against-average.
Â
Kenyon enters the weekend on a three-game tear, including a 7-0 victory over Oberlin on Tuesday. Katelyn Hutchinson has paced the attack with two goals and a pair of assists. Paulina Mendez and Hannah Paterakis have scored twice as well, and Molly Keen has two helpers. On the back end, reigning first-team All-American Sarah Speroff has started all three games and compiled a .750 save percentage and a 0.45 goals-against-average.
Â
Friday's bout will mark the second time in program history that CNU and Oberlin have met in field hockey. Last year, the Captains registered a 7-0 victory in Newport News. Meanwhile, Christopher Newport and Kenyon have split a pair of previous match-ups. KC won last year's meeting, 1-0, in Winchester, Virginia behind a 15-save gem by Speroff.
Â
Following their trip to the Buckeye State, the Captains will return home next week for a game against Catholic on September 13 at 5 p.m.
