YORK, Pa. -- The 8th-ranked Christopher Newport women's soccer team opened Capital Athletic Conference action on Saturday afternoon with a 1-0 win at York College of Pennsylvania. The Captains improved to 8-0-1 overall this season with a 1-0-0 record in CAC play, while the Spartans fall to 1-5-1, 0-1-0.
The clean sheet was the third of the season for the Christopher Newport defense, as senior goalkeeper
Carly Maglio picked up her second solo shutout of the year. It was the 20th career shutout for Maglio, making her just the third player in CNU history to reach the mark in her tenure.
Defensively, CNU pieced together a stout effort across the back line as senior leader
Danielle Pratt combined with sophomores
Shaye Doherty,
Keiley McCarthy, and rookie
Alexi Manley for the shutout. The defense gave up just one shot on-goal and five total attempts in the game.
The lone score of the match came early in the second half as the league's leading scorer, CNU rookie
Riley Cook, put away her eighth goal of the season on an indirect free kick. Sophomore
Carson Pokorny, the CAC leader in assists, tacked on her fourth of the year when she set up the scoring strike by Cook.
Cook's game-winning goal was her third of the season as she converted on the restart in the 52nd minute of action. Her eight goals as a rookie ranks tied for fifth for a single season in CNU history, and the most for a freshman since Emma O'Reilly finished her first year with a record 11 goals in 2010.
The Captains had plenty of chances in the game, including a near-insurance tally from junior
Gabby Gillis with just over six minutes remaining. Gillis stepped in and smashed a hard shot on-frame, but York goalkeeper Jess Wieber made a leaping save to knock the attempt off the crossbar and away from trouble.
The defense made sure the insurance goal was unnecessary, as the Captains polished off the 1-0 victory with a 16-5 advantage in total shots.
CNU will return to action in one week, taking on Wesley College in CAC play at Captains Field on Saturday, September 30 at 2:00 pm. Live stats and live video will be available at CNUsports.com/live.
