NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The 7th-ranked Christopher Newport women's soccer team flexed it's offensive muscle on Saturday afternoon, blowing past Wesley College, 11-0, in Capital Athletic Conference action. Junior midfielder Gabby Gillis recorded a hat trick to highlight the action, while four different Captains finished with multi-score games.

With the dominating victory, the Captains improved their program-best start to the season with a 9-0-1 overall record and also improved to 2-0-0 in league play. Wesley falls to 3-5-1, 0-2-0 after the setback.

Gillis scored three first-half goals, including the gamewinner, to mark the 21st hat trick in CNU women's soccer history. It is the first three-goal performance since Victoria Perry notched three scores against Shenandoah on September 17, 2014. She becomes the 14th different player to accomplish the feat.

The scoring started less than two and a half minutes into the game when rookie Maxine Borris set up Gillis' first score. After Shaye Doherty rolled a pass up the right side for Borris, the freshman beat a defender to the goal line and lofted a cross into the six-yard box. Gillis crashed the net and volleyed in the shot for her first goal of the day. Late in the 12th minute, rookie Riley Cook slipped a pass into the box for Gillis, who would go on to beat the keeper for her second goal.

Under a minute and a half later, the Captains made it 3-0 when sophomore defender Keiley McCarthy converted on the first of her two goals in the contest. Logan Montel found McCarthy down the left side of the box, where the second-year player ripped a hard shot into the left side.

After McCarthy's first goal, a three-goal spurt over just 1:46 of game time put the game well out of reach at 6-0. Alexis Haycraft, Gillis, and McCarthy each scored once in the roll to give the Captains a six-goal edge under 29 minutes into the contest. CNU would tack on one more in the first half, when Maddie Cochran scored in the 33rd minute to make it 7-0 at the intermission.

CNU scored four more goals in the second stanza, including back-to-back unassisted tallies from senior Alex Miller. Haycraft also tacked on her second goal of the game, marking the fourth player to notch multi-goal performances. Rookie Stori Carpenter assisted on Haycraft's goal for her first career point.

Finally, wrapping up the impressive 11-goal team effort was rookie Madeline Kelsey with her first career goal off an assist by Michelle Green. Green drilled a hard shot off the keeper's hands, where Kelsey was there to clean up on the back post for the final score.

CNU outshot the Wolverines, 54-1, matching the program record for total attempts in a game. The standard was set last season against Wesley on the road.

The Captains will return to action as they travel to Southern Virginia on Wednesday, October 4 for a 5:00 pm kickoff.
