Box Score in HTML Format

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Powered by two-goal performances from Rachael Allshouse and Jackie Kotoriy, the nationally-ranked Christopher Newport field hockey team surged to a 4-1 win over Washington & Lee on Saturday. The Captains improved to 8-1 on the season while the Generals fell to 4-4.

While just two players combined for all four goals scored, four different Captains also got into the scoring column by providing assists in Saturday's contest. In the first half, Courtney Fiest and Madison Doss each chipped in helpers, while Carol Thompson and Lily Bryngelson added assists in the second half.

CNU captured its fourth straight win with the victory, and improved to 12-1 all-time against the Generals. During the current win streak, CNU has outscored opponents, 13-1, and the Captains have registered multi-goal efforts in each of their eight wins this season.

The scoring started early at Captains Turf Field, while playing in front of a large crowd on a toasty fall afternoon. Just under seven minutes into the game, CNU lit up the scoreboard on a tip by Allshouse. Rachel Cooke slid a long pass across the top of the circle for Fiest, who ripped a long shot toward the goal. Positioned by the goalkeeper, Allshouse got her stick on the ball and tipped it in for her first goal of the afternoon.

Just over eight minutes later, the Captains' junior leading scorer would cash in again on another tip. This time, it was Madison Doss who delivered a hard shot across the cage, where Allhouse was ready on the back post for the tip. The goal would hold up as the eventual game-winning tally, marking her team-best fourth winner of the year.

CNU carried the 2-0 advantage into the halftime break, while outshooting Washington & Lee, 9-2.

In the second half,  the Captains extended the lead to three in the 49th minute when Carol Thompson found Jackie Kotoriy for a wide open net. The Generals goalkeeper came out to defend Thompson's drive to the net, but the savvy senior slipped a slow roller to her left for the streaking rookie behind the defense.

After Washington & Lee got on the board in the 53rd minute when Lauren Paolano cleaned up a shot by Graysen Doran, the Captains would push the lead, and final score, back to three. With less than 15 minutes left to play, a pair of freshmen hooked up for the final tally when Lily Bryngelson delivered a long through ball up the middle right to Kotoriy's stick. Kotoriy collected, turned and hammered home a hard shot into the cage to the left of the keeper.

For the game, CNU outshot the visiting Generals by a final mark of 19-6, including an 11-3 advantage in shots on-goal. Senior goalkeeper Stephanie McKinney made two saves in 52:30 of game time, while rookie Olivia Davis cleaned up the final 17:30 without facing a shot.

Christopher Newport will return to action on Saturday, September 30, as they host Salisbury University in the Capital Athletic Conference opener. Start time is set for Noon at Captains Turf Field for the nationally-ranked battle. Live stats and live video will be available at CNUsports.com/live.
