Greene and McKinney Help Lead No. 15 CNU Field Hockey to Thrilling 1-0 Victory over No. 3 Salisbury

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- In a battle between two of the top-ranked defenses in the nation, the 15th-ranked Christopher Newport field hockey team capitalized on a first-half goal by Courtnie Greene and a breathtaking defensive performance headlined by Stephanie McKinney as the Captains toppled No. 3 Salisbury, 1-0, during an edge-of-your-seat thriller to kick off Capital Athletic Conference action on a sun-soaked Saturday afternoon at Captains Turf Field.

Stealing the show in the defensive battle, McKinney was masterful between the pipes. The senior goalkeeper came through with seven saves, including a momentum-turning stop on a penalty stroke early in the second half. The back line was equally dominant as CNU limited the Sea Gulls to just eight on-target attempts, including one that was brushed aside by Brittan Muir.

Quieting the potent SU attack, CNU became the first team to register a shutout against Salisbury during a CAC bout in over a decade. Salisbury had scored at least once in 65 straight conference games since former league member Catholic registered an identical 1-0 victory on October 4, 2006.

With the win, Christopher Newport improves to 9-1 on the season, including 1-0 in league action. The victory also marks the program's second all-time win over a top-five team, joining the 2012 squad's 3-2 triumph against No. 5 Mary Washington.

On the other side of the field, Salisbury falls to 6-2 overall with an 0-1 mark in conference play.

Entering the game ranked first in the nation in goals-against-average, Christopher Newport flashed its skills on the defensive side early on. Muir won a sprint for a deep roller, cut off a cross in the middle of the circle, and cleaned up a scrum along the left pipe with a clutch defensive save in the first 10 minutes of the contest.

Along with Muir, Alexa Weaver charged up the field and caught up to a breakaway opportunity for the Sea Gulls before Kennedy Johnson showed off her wheels and stymied a lengthy run along the far sideline as well.

With the defense standing firm, the CNU attack tested the Sea Gulls with a pair of early corner attempts. On the first try, Muir smacked a long feed into the circle that Rachael Allshouse deflected, but SU snuffed it out. Moments later, Muir won a duel along the arc and flipped a bouncer off a defender to secure another corner, but Courtney Fiest's ensuing blast whistled wide.

Remaining vigilant, the Captains regained possession in the 15th minute. After securing the roller, Lily Bryngelson loaded up and hammered a long-range screamer into the circle, which handcuffed a defender and gave Christopher Newport another corner attempt. This time, the hosts would not be denied.

Jackie Kotoriy inserted the ball beautifully to Greene, who settled along the right side of the arc. After stopping the feed, she stared down a wave of defenders as the visitors cleared the cage. Two Sea Gulls dropped down to prevent a low laser, while a third came bolting directly at her. Unfazed, Greene opted for an aerial assault, floating a parachute over the defense that cleared the out-stretched stick of SU's goalie and came crashing down into the back of the cage for a 1-0 edge.

Staring at a deficit, Salisbury attempted to retaliate, but CNU stood tall. A flock of Sea Gulls stormed the zone and pounded away, but McKinney stoned three straight shots. Meanwhile, Mackenzie Neylon was a disruptive force along the left side of the cage, destroying several runs by the visitors before anything could materialize. Moments later, Greene cleared out a hopper that found its way into the middle of the circle before Weaver batted down a high rocket along the arc.

Trading rallies, Carol Thompson cruised up the far sideline in the 23rd minute. Showing off her stick skills, the senior dipped, dodged, and darted around a slew of defenders before earning a corner. Later, the squad earned a second opportunity after Allshouse sent a bouncer into the circle, but Salisbury managed to hang on against the attack.

After thwarting CNU's second corner, SU pieced together a counterstrike and rushed down the field, but Johnson disrupted the run along the far sideline before Muir mopped up a roller on the interior. Moments later, with time ticking down on the first half, Muir faced a two-on-one opportunity along the left side, but she quickly darted between the attackers, pounced on the ball, and sent it out of the zone to help keep the 1-0 lead entering halftime.

Following the break, Salisbury wasted little time putting pressure on the Captains, but McKinney and Weaver were simply spectacular. Weaver clamped down on a pair of runs, including a dangerous rally along the near sideline. McKinney also stoned a rip along the end line before the two teamed up for the defensive play of the year.

In the 42nd minute, a Sea Gull broke free on a dead sprint towards the cage. Although the attacker had a 10-yard head start on the deepest CNU defender, Weaver scorched the turf, caught up to the play, and made a diving stop at the last second to push the ball away and prevent the breakaway goal.

Although Salisbury was awarded a penalty stroke on the play, McKinney capped off the rally with another highlight-reel effort. Staring down the Sea Gull, she settled in between the pipes and quickly put her savvy and athleticism on full display. The attacker tried to bury a missile along the left pipe, but McKinney laid out and used every inch of her 5-2 frame to deflect the ball with her out-stretched stick to keep SU off the board.

After slamming the door on the penalty stroke, the Captains faced an all-out assault as the Sea Gulls tried to find a sliver of daylight in the CNU defense. Muir knocked down a bouncer inside the circle and swiped another pass away from a pair of attackers on the far side. Later, Rachel Cooke intercepted a feed just outside of the arc, and Fiest forced an attempt to sail wide along the near side.

Just as ruthless in the center of the field, Greene cleaned up an endless string of rallies at the top of the circle as the Sea Gulls tried to bully their way into the zone. Later, after the visitors earned back-to-back corners, the junior dynamo disrupted the second opportunity after snatching the ball and punching it off of an attacker before celebrating with a subtle fist-pump for a job well done.

Looking to give the defense a breather, Neylon stole a ball and sailed it down the field to the CNU attack. Keeping control for a minute, Bryngelson dismantled a defender in a one-on-one situation to run some time off the clock before Salisbury whistled for a timeout with six minutes remaining.

After the break, a Sea Gull slipped free for a second, but Johnson busted back into the circle to break up the shot and send it spiraling out of bounds. Later, the Captains responded on the other side and earned a corner with four minutes left, but the squad could not quite capitalize on Madison Doss' insertion.

With time winding down, the defense settled in for one last stand. Cooke took some time off the clock after breaking up a one-on-one situation before spinning around two defenders with 90 seconds left. Later, Allshouse intercepted a pair of passes towards the circle before Greene added the finishing touches and swatted the ball away as the clock hit zero, ending the contest and starting a bench-clearing celebration.

Overall, Salisbury held a 14-10 advantage in shots, including an 8-6 lead in on-target attempts. The Sea Gulls also had a 7-6 edge in corners, but McKinney's seven saves and the defense's domination eliminated any statistical advantage for SU.

Christopher Newport will return to action on October 4 when the squad heads to Fredericksburg for another nationally-ranked showdown with No. 17 Mary Washington at 4 p.m.
