Captains Men's Soccer Takes on York (Pa.) Saturday on the Road in Conference Opener

YORK, Pa. -- Christopher Newport men's soccer hits the road Saturday to take on York College of Pennsylvania in the Capital Athletic Conference season opener. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 pm as the 4-2-0 Captains face the host Spartans, who come in with a 2-4-1 overall record.

Live stats and a live video webcast will be available for fans unable to attend the contest, with links available at the Men's Soccer schedule on CNUsports.com.

With a 2-0 win at home last season, the Captains pulled within one game of evening the all-time series at .500 as the Spartans own a slight 6-5-5 advantage in the matchup. Since joining the Capital Athletic Conference, the record is 1-1-3, with only one shutout between the two teams.

So far this saeson, the Captains are 4-2-0 and are coming off a 4-2 victory against Virginia Wesleyan University on Wednesday night. The CNU offense has been dangerous all season long, averaging 3.67 goals per game with one of the league's top weapons leading the charge in senior Jimmy Grace.

Grace has 16 points on seven goals and two assists already this season as he looks to continue his success from last year's All-American season. Junior Stephen Durbin is also in double figures already, scoring five goals and chipping in one assist for 11 points. Durbin also leads the team in gamewinners with three.

Defensively, the Captains are still working through some shifts in the back line, with four different starting lineups in the first six games. Sophomore Derek Cook has been the only starter for all six games on the back line, while junior Bobby Seifert and senior Zach Douglass have each missed one game this year.

York (Pa.) comes in with one of the top rookies in the league leading the team in scoring through the first seven games. Zion Friday has scored two goals and chipped in three assists for a team-high seven points, while also leading the team in total shots with 21. The Spartans defense has given up 14 goals this season for a 1.92 goals against average.

Following Saturday night's tilt at York, the Captains will face Randolph College in the non-conference finale on September 27 in Lynchburg, Va.
