VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- Taking on one of the top team's in the country, the Christopher Newport women's soccer team would capture a thrilling season-opening victory on Friday evening, downing 5th-ranked Trinity (Texas), 1-0, in double overtime. Junior
Kayla Locklear converted the game's lone tally with less than five minutes remaining in the match, handing the Tigers just their second loss in their last 25 games.
Locklear picked up her fourth career game-winning goal in the 105th minute of action when she collected a loose ball in the box and deposited a shot into the bottom right corner of the goal. The Captains erupted in celebration at Foster Field on the campus of Virginia Wesleyan University, closing out game one of the Atlantic Orthopaedic Tournament hosted by the Marlins.
With the goal, CNU handed the Tigers their first regular season loss since October 7, 2012 when Trinity suffered a 3-2 loss vs. Loras. The stingy Trinity defense allowed just four goals in the regular season all of last season.
After withstanding an early surge by the Tigers in the first half, the Captains controlled the bulk of the action going forward throughout the game. Junior
Gabby Gillis contributed the game's first shot on goal in the 37th minute and
Riley Cook added an attempt on frame less than five minutes into the second half.
On the other side of the ball, the Captains defense picked up their first shutout of the season. Senior goalkeeper
Carly Maglio made three stops, including a game-saving effort in the 84th minute when Chelsea Cole got loose for an open look. After Trinity nearly slipped by late in the game, the CNU offense took over, getting on-goal attempts from Cook and
Sydney Rife in the final five minutes of regulation.
In extra time, CNU led the way in chances with five shots on-goal, including another attempt by Cook in the 95th minute.
Logan Montel, Gillis, and
Danielle Pratt all peppered Trinity goalkeeper Kalli Douma before Locklear converted on the winner with 4:51 remaining on the clock.
For the game, CNU outshot their opponents 16-9, including a 9-3 edge in shots on-frame. Maglio earned her 19th career shutout and first of the year with three saves between the pipes.
Christopher Newport will take on Catholic University of America on Saturday at 6:00 pm to conclude the Marlins home tournament. Live stats and video will be available at CNUsports.com.
