Box Score in HTML Format

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- After carrying a 2-1 lead into halftime, the Christopher Newport women's soccer team blasted by Catholic University with three goals in the first two and a half minutes of the second half before growing the lead and final score to 6-1. The Captains improved to 2-0-0 on the season with the impressive offensive performance, while the Cardinals fall to 1-1-0 after the opening weekend.

Christopher Newport blitzed out of the intermission in one of the fastest back-to-back-to-back goal-scoring performances in program history. Among the quickest in NCAA Division III history, the Captains netted three goals in a span of 1:36. During the spurt, junior midfielder Gabby Gillis and sophomore Logan Montel each put away penalty kick strikes, while rookie Riley Cook added her second goal of the contest with a hard rip by a defender.

Prior to the fireworks early in the second half, the Captains had built a 2-1 lead at the break. First, Cook picked up her first career goal in the 14th minute when she collected a rebound and scored off the loose ball in the box. Then, in the 25th minute, senior Alex Miller chipped in the eventual game-winning goal off a pretty combination play started from the Captains defense. Rookie Alexi Manley started the play with a long ball into the box, where junior Kayla Locklear one-timed a cross for Miller, who ripped home the shot.

Catholic would cut the lead in half in the 34th minute when Andrea Jablonskyj set up the third goal of the season for Elizabeth Johnson. It was one of just four shots on-frame by the Cardinals in the first half as CNU's senior goalkeeper Carly Maglio stoned the other three attempts.

Rounding out the scoring in the onslaught by the Captains was sophomore Carson Pokorny in the 58th minute of action. Pokorny made a play up the side and sent a long arcing ball toward the goal. Her shot lofted by the keeper and into the back of the net for the sixth and final goal of the game by CNU.

With the game in hand, head coach Dan Weiler was able to get 30 players into the contest, including sophomore Maddy Belanger between the pipes. The 11:23 played by Belanger was the first appearance by a goalkeeper other than Maglio since October 28, 2014.

Riley Cook and Carson Pokorny each led the team with three shots on-goal while Gillis added a pair. CNU outshot Catholic, 22-17.

The Captains will return to Foster Field on the campus of Virginia Wesleyan University for their third straight game to start the year when CNU travels to face the host Marlins on Tuesday, September 5 at 7:30 pm. Following the action in Virginia Beach, CNU will open home action next weekend against Cal Lutheran and Methodist.
