Box Score in HTML Format

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- After rallying back from a 2-0 deficit against Virginia Wesleyan in the second half, the Christopher Newport women's soccer team was forced to settle for a 2-2 draw after regulation on Tuesday evening, as lightning forced a delay just before overtime began. The Captains remain unbeaten as their record runs to 2-0-1 on the season, while the Marlins picked up a tie and improve to 0-2-1 on the year.

After the home team took a 2-0 edge early in the second half, the Captains scored twice in the span of just over six minutes to even the game and force overtime. As the teams cleared the field for extra time, lightning was spotted in the area; with consistent strikes locally, the officials made the ruling that the game would not be able to continue and called the game a draw.

Virginia Wesleyan struck first in the 14th minute of action when Marli Hayward put away a rebound for the Marlins. Hayward scored both goals in the game for the home team, as she added her second goal of the season in the 57th minute to push the lead to a pair. Ann Marie Moffett set up the second goal, picking up the assist.

Facing their first deficit of the season, the young Christopher Newport offense showed a steely resolve as they chipped away at the Virginia Wesleyan defense. The first goal would come from the penalty kick marker as CNU drew a foul in the box in the 62nd minute of play. Junior Gabby Gillis stepped in to deliver the goal, shooting off the goalkeepers hand and into the side of the goal.

With the lead cut in half, the Captains continues to pressure offensively until they converted on a corner kick in the 69th minute of play. Sophomore Carson Pokorny earned the assist as rookie Maxine Borris put away the shot in the middle of a crowded box for the score. The equalizing goal was the last of the action going forward, as neither team had a quality attempt on frame for the remainder of regulation.

Once the teams stepped off the field, the weather took over and ended the contest after 90 minutes of play.  CNU outshot VWU by a final tally of 11-8, while both teams put five shots on-goal. CNU held a 4-1 advantage in corner kicks and both goalkeepers collected three saves in the game.

CNU will return to action this weekend as they host the CNU Captains Invite on Friday and Sunday, welcoming in Cal Lutheran University and Methodist University. Virginia Wesleyan will serve as the third team in the neutral site games on Captains Field as action begins at 5:00 pm on Friday with the Marlins taking on the Monarchs. CNU and Cal Lutheran will play tentatively at 7:30 pm.
