CAMDEN, N.J. -- Playing in the final game of the 17th Annual Cialella Soccer Classic hosted by Rutgers-Camden, the 21st-ranked Christopher Newport men's soccer team paired an impressive defensive showing with a strong offensive performance to shut out the host Scarlet Raptors, 4-0. The victory marks the 300th in the career of head coach
Steve Shaw, becoming just the 23rd active coach in Division III to reach the milestone.
Shaw's historical win runs his overall career record to 300-101-35 for a winning percentage of 72.8%, ranking in the top 15 nationally at the Division III level. Shaw is in his 22nd year coaching the Captains and has led the team to nine NCAA Tournament appearances, five conference championships, and four NCAA Elite Eight finishes.
The Captains (2-2-0) shook off back-to-back losses to nationally-ranked teams with a complete effort against Rutgers-Camden (1-3-1), holding their opponent to just four total shots in the contest.
CNU landed three players on the Cialella Soccer Classic All-Tournament Team, as junior defender
Bobby Seifert, junior midfielder
Daniel Zeitoun, and junior goalkeeper
Zach Pedini all earned a spot. Rowan led the All-Tournament team with four overall selections, including the offensive and defensive MVP's.
After a relatively uneventful first half, the Captains would take a 1-0 lead in the 39th minute on what would prove to be the only tally the CNU defense would need. Senior
James Lee connected on a shot inside the box after Rutgers-Camden turned the ball over. Lee stole the ball and smashed home his second goal of the season, marking his first winner.
Just seven total shots were taken in the first 45 minutes, with CNU holding a slight 5-2 advantage overall. In the second half, the tables turned and the Captains' offense took off to the tune of 14 shots after the intermission. Three would find the back of the net and seven of the 14 attempts were on frame.
Zeitoun would score the second goal of the night in the 71st minute off a nice feed from
Stephen Durbin. The junior tandem hooked up on a pass across the box to the left side, where Zeitoun connected on a shot back across and into the back panel of the goal.
Just minutes later, Lee would continue his strong performance by setting up senior All-American
Jimmy Grace for his first of two goals on the night. At the top of the box, Lee found Grace open with a quick tap pass, where he drove a missile to the back of the net.
Finally, Grace would tack on a fourth goal of the night, as well as his fourth of the young season, in the 84th minute of action. Fellow senior
Andrew Gogolin picked up the assist on the score, setting up Grace for the goal.
On the defensive side of the ball, the Captains swallowed up any potential chance of the Scarlet Raptors moving into attack mode. Held to just two more shots in the second half, the Rutgers-Camden offense mustered just four total attempts, and didn't test Pedini with a single shots on-frame all night. The back line was led by complete game efforts from Seifert,
Zach Douglass,
Davis Pillow, and
Derek Cook.
Christopher Newport will return to action on September 14 as they travel to Greensboro College for a 4:00 pm kickoff.
