A LOOK AT THE CAPTAINS
Entering the final stretch of the regular season, Christopher Newport is currently tied for fourth in the CAC standings. The top-four squads are assured of at least one home game in the league playoffs with the first and second seeds receiving a bye to the semifinals.
Boasting two of the most electric offensive threats in the league, the Captains have gotten huge contributions from
Sarah Culver and
Meaghan Galvin throughout the season. Culver currently sits second in the league with 40 goals, while Galvin is second in points (71) and assists (37). She also ranks first in the conference and has already established a single-season program record with 89 draw controls.
Equally effective on the attack,
Catie Chess is 11th in the CAC with 37 points and has scored at least two goals in each of her last five appearances. She has also converted seven consecutive free-position shots during that stretch.
On the other side, Chess also leads the team and ranks 10th in the conference with 14 caused turnovers, while
Mackenzie Regen has 13. Both standouts forced a pair against Salisbury during a terrific effort against the 13th-ranked Sea Gulls on Wednesday.
LAST TIME OUT
Against Salisbury, Christopher Newport held up against the vaunted Sea Gulls and secured a second-half lead, but SU managed to respond and sneak away with a 14-12 victory. During the contest, Culver erupted for six goals. Putting that performance into perspective, the Salisbury defense, which entered the contest ranked 16th in the nation in goals-against-average, had allowed six or fewer goals to seven
teams during the season, including No. 3 Washington & Lee and No. 19 Colby.
Culver's six goals also marked the most by an individual against Salisbury since Catholic's Mary Swarthout also struck six times against the Sea Gulls on March 3, 2012.
SCOUTING THE WOLVERINES
Wesley opened 2017 with five straight victories but has stumbled in recent weeks, dropping seven straight contests dating back to mid-March. Despite the recent stretch, the Wolverines still rank second in the league in caused-turnovers-per-game with a 9.58 mark. Shelby Schirmer also stands second in the conference with 108 saves, including four double-digit efforts this season.
Offensively, Fallon Fore leads Wesley and ranks 10th in the conference with 38 points. She has also registered six hat-tricks this season, including two in her last four appearances. Additionally, Brianna Bacon has 27 points and a team-high nine assists, while Paige Brehm has 21 goals as well.
SERIES HISTORY
Wesley and CNU have met three times with the Captains holding a 3-0 edge in the all-time series. Last year, Christopher Newport posted a 19-1 victory behind three-goal efforts by Chess and
Anna Bowers.
UP NEXT
Following Saturday's action, Christopher Newport will remain on the road for a 4 p.m. contest at St. Mary's (Md.) on Wednesday.
