A LOOK AT THE CAPTAINS
Entering the midweek battle,
Meaghan Galvin is one of only two players in the nation to rank in the top-10 nationally in points, assists, and draw controls. The senior standout currently ranks fourth in the NCAA with 82 draw controls, which also equals her own single-season program record. Meanwhile, her 36 assists have already established a new career-high and place her fifth in the NCAA, while her 68 points rank sixth in the country.
Along with Galvin,
Sarah Culver leads the team and is tied for third in the conference with 34 goals. The second-year star has scored at least once in each of the last seven games and boasts eight multi-goal efforts this year.
Catie Chess has also scored four goals in three of her last four appearances, and
Erin Callahan has been a key facilitator, dishing out eight assists over the past three contests.
On the defensive side, Chess has a team-high 12 caused turnovers, while
Mariah Ginebra and
Mackenzie Regen have forced 11 miscues apiece. Ginebra also leads CNU with 22 ground balls, including five against Frostburg State on Saturday. Between the pipes,
Kaitlyn Ready has a .435 save percentage and an 8.71 goals-against-average in 11 games this season.
LAST TIME OUT
On Saturday, the Captains picked up their ninth victory of the year with an 18-7 triumph over Frostburg State. Celebrating Senior Day, Galvin came through with eight points, including five goals, while Callahan dished out three assists.
Bailey Lien also picked up her first victory after notching three saves against the Bobcats.
SCOUTING THE SEA GULLS
Salisbury has won seven of its last eight games with its only loss during that run coming against top-ranked Franklin & Marshall. Even more impressive in conference action, the Sea Gulls enter Wednesday riding a 99-game winning streak in league play dating back to 2004. That run stands as the longest streak in the nation.
So far this season, the Sea Gulls have been led by a tremendous defensive unit, which ranks 16th in the country in goals-against-average (6.00). Gianna Falcone has anchored the team in the crease and ranks second in the league with a .496 save percentage. Helping out on the back end, Kieran Kelleher leads the squad with 13 caused turnovers and 20 ground balls, while Kacy Koolage has forced eight miscues as well.
Offensively, Dana King boasts a team-high 37 points and has back-to-back multi-goal efforts. Gabrielle Mongno also is coming off of a four-goal outburst against St. Mary's (Md.) on Saturday, and Kristen Murphy boasts a team-high 16 assists, including four against the Seahawks.
SERIES HISTORY
Salisbury and CNU have met 15 times with the Sea Gulls holding a 15-0 record in the all-time series. Last year, the Captains battled to a 5-5 deadlock at halftime before SU slipped ahead and sealed a 13-6 win with a big second half. During that game, Culver posted a pair of goals for Christopher Newport, while Gabbi Nieves had four for Salisbury.
UP NEXT
Following a four-game homestand, CNU will hit the road for back-to-back games beginning on Saturday with a 2 p.m. showdown at Wesley.
