RICHMOND, Va. -- Capping a busy three-match weekend, the 33rd-ranked CNU men's tennis team traveled up Interstate 64 to take on NCAA Division I foe University of Richmond. The Spiders captured a 7-0 win over the Captains on Sunday, despite several hard-fought battles in both singles and doubles action. The Captains fall to 9-8 overall this season, while Richmond is now 20-2 after picking up their 19th straight win.
Playing under Division I scoring rules, the Spiders picked up the doubles point with wins at 2 and 3. In the No. 1 doubles matchup, the Captains were locked in a tight battle that was tied at 4-4 when the bout was halted. Juniors
Justin Cerny and
David Reed were knotted up with Jonathan Quenard and Caleb Troy in the match on line one, kicking off a common theme for the Captains once singles play began.
All six bouts were tight, despite the home team picking up wins across the board. At No. 2 singles, Cerny had one of the top performances for CNU, stretching his opponent, Canyon Teague, to a second set tiebreaker before suffering the setback (6-1, 7-6 (3)). At No. 3, rookie
Andy Mason put together the closest match of the day for CNU, suffering a pair of 7-5 set losses against Matthew Fernandez.
Christopher Newport earned at least three game victories in all six bouts.
Dominic Lacombe and
Nicholas Ruzicka also had a 7-5 set loss in their matches, as the Captains showcased their resiliency.
The Captains will return to action this weekend with a pair of Capital Athletic Conference road matches. CNU will travel to Southern Virginia on Saturday, April 8 at 2:30 pm and on to Frostburg State on Sunday, April 9.
