BALTIMORE, Md. -- Wrapping up the regular season on the road against the 21st-ranked Johns Hopkins Blue Jays, the 35th-ranked Christopher Newport men's tennis team suffered an 8-1 setback. The Captains head into tournament play with a 12-9 overall record while the Blue Jays are now 9-2 on the year.
CNU got their lone win at No. 3 doubles where
Michael Dodd and
Arttu Fiva picked up the victory over David Perez and Scott Thygesen. The CNU pair was trailing 4-1 when the Hopkins pair retired.
The Captains battled on the top line, as
Justin Cerny and
David Reed, ranked No. 2 in the region, suffered a 9-7 loss to Joseph Cartledge and Jeremy Dubin. The Blue Jays picked up the sweep in doubles with an 8-3 win at No. 2.
In singles play, the Captains won multiple games in all but one individual matchup.
David Reed picked up three games in each set against Jeremy Dubin on the top line, and rookie
Andy Mason won five total games in his matchup at No. 3 singles against Perez.
