NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- With the Capital Athletic Conference playoffs looming, the Christopher Newport women's lacrosse team will host seventh-ranked York (Pa.) in the regular season finale at 2 p.m. on Saturday at Captains Turf Field.
Entering the weekend, Christopher Newport sits at 10-6 on the season, including 4-3 in league action. York (Pa.) is 12-2 overall with a pristine 7-0 mark in CAC play.
For those fans unable to make it to the game, live stats and a video stream of the action will be available at CNUsports.com. Direct links to both features can be found at the top of this release and on the CNU schedule page.
PLAYOFF POSSIBILITIES
Entering the regular season finale, Christopher Newport is currently tied for fourth in the league standings. Regardless of the outcome of Saturday's contest, CNU's seeding in the postseason will be determined by the result of the St. Mary's (Md.) - Frostburg State battle this weekend.
If St. Mary's wins, the Seahawks would secure the No. 4 seed, and CNU would fall to the No. 5 spot. If Frostburg State wins, the Captains would clinch the No. 4 spot, the Bobcats would be No. 5, and SMC would fall to No. 6.
The postseason begins next Tuesday with first-round action. The No. 4 seed will host the No. 5 seed, while the No. 6 seed will travel to Mary Washington.
A LOOK AT THE CAPTAINS
Entering the weekend,
Meaghan Galvin currently ranks second in the CAC with 81 points and 41 assists, while her 40 goals place her fourth in the conference. She is just the second Captain in program history to register at least 40 goals and 40 assists in the same season, joining former standout Meghan Harkey, who accomplished the feat twice.
Along with her work on the offensive end, Galvin leads the conference and ranks third in the NCAA with 94 draw controls. Her 13 free-position strikes are also second in the CAC and fifth on the program's all-time single-season charts.
In addition to Galvin,
Sarah Culver leads the Captains and sits second in the league with 45 goals. She has scored at least twice in each of her last four outings and boasts eight hat-tricks this year. Culver is also tied for third in the league with 12 free-position goals, while
Catie Chess is fifth with 11. Overall, Christopher Newport has converted 53 percent of its eight-meter shots, which is the 12th-highest rate in the NCAA.
SCOUTING THE SPARTANS
York (Pa.) enters the weekend with the No. 1 seed in the CAC playoffs already locked up. The Spartans earned the top spot after upending Salisbury for the first time in program history with a 10-6 win on Wednesday. Not only did that lock up the regular season championship, but it also snapped SU's 101-game winning streak in conference action dating back to 2004.
One of the stingiest defenses in the nation, the Spartans have allowed an average of 5.27 goals per game, which ranks as the 10th-lowest rate in the country. Charlotte Wright currently boasts a .463 save percentage and a 5.62 goals-per-game mark during her time in the crease. Meanwhile, Nicole Clauter has a team-high 14 caused turnovers to go along with 51 draw controls.
Offensively, York features a well-balanced attack that includes seven players with at least 10 goals. Meghan Fox boasts a team-high 31 strikes, including five hat-tricks and a pair of goals against SU on Wednesday. Regan Fox also has 24 goals for YCP, while Katelyn Cattrano sits fourth in the conference with 25 assists.
SERIES HISTORY
York and CNU have only met four times with the Spartans holding a 4-0 edge in the series. Last year, the Spartans picked up a pair of victories, including a 10-5 triumph in the first round of the CAC Tournament.
