Shiflett Caps Captains Comeback as CNU Softball Sweeps York in CAC Play

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Christopher Newport took two Saturday from York College of Pennsylvania in Capital Athletic Conference softball action at Captains Park. CNU captured the opener, 9-6, and then staged a dramatic come-from-behind effort to win the nightcap, 8-7.

Senior centerfielder Rachael Shiflett completed the comeback with a walk-off game-winning single in the bottom of the seventh inning of game two. York held a 7-3 advantage heading to the bottom of the seventh before the Captains erupted for five runs to pull out the victory. The single for Shiflett was her fourth of the game, and her sixth single in eight at bats in the doubleheader.

York scored three first inning runs in the second game and never trailed until Shiflett's game-winning hit in the seventh. Christopher Newport rallied for five runs on six hits in the dramatic seventh inning, and junior Brittney Walters, who had homered the inning before, scored the game-winning run on Shiflett's base hit.

In the opening game, the Captains trailed 2-0 to start before jumping to a 7-2 lead with two runs in the bottom of the first and five more in the second. After adding two runs in the fourth to take a 9-3 lead, the Captains held on for the 9-6 triumph.

Seniors Maiven McKnight and Tara Heatwole earned the victories in the pitching circle for CNU. McKnight is now 7-0 and Heatwole evened her mark at 5-5 for the season. McKnight threw the first four innings of the opener, while Heatwole entered in relief in the seventh inning of game two.

Junior shortstop Rachael Payne was five-for-eight at the plate in the twin bill, with three runs scored and two runs batted in.  CNU recorded 17 runs on 30 hits in the sweep, with 15 hits in each game. Keith Parr's squad is now 19-7 overall and 4-0 in the CAC. The Captains have won eight of their last nine games.

York fell to 14-10 on the season with the two losses and 0-4 in conference play.
