CNU Softball Completes Weekend Sweep with Senior Day Victories over Penn State-Harrisburg

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Christopher Newport's bats remained hot Sunday as the Captains defeated Penn State-Harrisburg twice at Captains Park. CNU won the opener, 11-3, and then took the nightcap, 10-2. Both games were halted in the fifth inning due to the eight-run rule.

The Captains have now won seven straight games and ten of their last 11. CNU is 21-7 overall and 6-0 atop the Capital Athletic Conference. Prior to the doubleheader, seniors Tara Heatwole, Maiven McKnight, Rachael Shiflett, and Jenna Sprinkle were honored on Senior Day.

Senior starting pitchers Maiven McKnight and Tara Heatwole were the beneficiaries of the run production. McKnight earned the win in the opener to improve to 8-0 on the season, striking out six and scattering three runs on four hits in four innings of work. Heatwole won the second game, yielding two runs on five hits while striking out three in five innings in the circle. She is now 6-5 on the year.

While it was Senior Day, two freshman came up big at the plate for the Captains. Freshman rightfielder Tara Deck ended the nightcap with a two-run, walk-off home run to push the advantage to eight runs and end the game at 10-2. It was Deck's first home run as a Captain. Another freshman, Liz Andrews, was four-for-six at the plate with five runs batted in the twin bill. Junior shortstop Rachael Payne also had a big day for CNU, going four-for-five with five runs scored and five runs batted in the two triumphs.

Christopher Newport ended up scoring 38 runs on 52 hits in four victories over the weekend. CNU defeated York twice on Saturday, scoring 17 runs on 30 base hits.

The Lions of Penn State-Harrisburg are now 10-8 overall and 2-4 in the CAC following the losses on a sunny and pleasant day at Captains Park..CNU is now 8-0 all-time vs. Penn State-Harrisburg.

Christopher Newport will host Mary Washington on Wednesday at Captains Park. The CAC doubleheader will begin at 4:00 p.m. The Captains are alone at the top of the league standings at 6-0, followed by Frostburg State at 5-1 and Mary Washington and Salisbury at 4-2.

The games Wednesday will be the final regular-season home games for Keith Parr's squad, and the Captains will conclude the regular season with three road doubleheaders before the CAC Tournament April 20-22 at the top-seeded school.
