NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Closing out the regular season home matches on a beautiful day at the Eyre Courts, the 33rd-ranked Christopher Newport men's tennis team sailed to a pair of 9-0 wins in Capital Athletic Conference action on Saturday afternoon. First, CNU took down Penn State Harrisburg and then followed it up with a dismantling of York (Pa.), as the Captains improve to 9-7 overall, with a 3-1 record in CAC action.
In the first of three matches this weekend, Director of Tennis shuffled his lineup around and still managed to come away with straight set victories across the board. Rookies
Andy Mason and
Dominic Lacombe played at the top two lines in singles, picking up their first career wins at those slots.
Playing at home for the last time in the regular season, a pair of CNU seniors were recognized on Senior Day.
Michael Dodd went 4-0 and
Arttu Fiva added a 2-0 day. Dodd didn't give up a game in either of his matches at No. 4 singles, downing Benjamin Rusling first and York's Lukas Olson in the second match. Fiva earned a 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 5 singles against York, and also combined with Lacombe for the 8-1 win at 3-doubles in the first match.
Against Penn State Harrisburg,
William Trang (6-0, 6-3),
Nicholas Ruzicka (6-0, 6-0), and
Alex Johnson (6-1, 6-0) all had wins in singles play. Mason and Trang won at 1-doubles and Dodd paired with Ruzicka at No. 2.
In the afternoon matchup with York,
Justin Cerny and
David Reed appeared to pick up the win at No. 1 doubles, and Cerny would go on to win at 1-singles. Like Dodd,
William Trang finished with a 4-0 day, picking up the win at No. 2 singles (7-5, 6-7 (5), 10-7) and with Mason, at No. 2 doubles (8-2).
Christopher Newport will return to action on Sunday, traveling to face Division I Richmond at 3:00 pm. The Spiders are 17-2 and have won 16 straight matches this season.
