WILMINGTON, N.C. -- The Christopher Newport women's lacrosse team saw its three-game winning streak come to an end on Wednesday afternoon as the Captains dropped a 19-10 decision to No. 6 Catholic during a neutral-site battle at Cape Fear Academy.
With the setback, CNU falls to 3-3 on the season, while the victory bumps Catholic to 3-0.
Against the Cardinals,
Meaghan Galvin led the Captains with eight points, including four goals. The reigning CAC Offensive Player of the Week also led the team with five draw controls and collected two ground balls as well.
Along with Galvin,
Carly Wilson contributed four points, including a team-high three assists, while
Erin Callahan scored twice.
Lindsay Weaver,
Samantha Wettengel, and
Colleen Bourgal also found the back of the net for CNU.
On the defensive side,
Kaitlyn Ready came through with six saves against the high-powered Catholic attack.
Tess D'Arcy and
Mackenzie Regen also forced two turnovers apiece, while Wilson and
Mariah Ginebra contributed three ground balls each.
Overall, Catholic held a 29-24 advantage in shots and a 28-18 lead in ground balls. The two squads also split the game's 30 draws.
The game capped off a spring break trip for the two programs, which also included a combined youth clinic on Monday in Wilmington. It marked the second straight year that the Captains and Cardinals have come together for a clinic after working with the Boys & Girls Club at Pinedale Manor last year.
Christopher Newport will return to action on March 15 when the Captains continue their current five-game road swing with a 7 p.m. showdown at Randolph-Macon.
