Captains Dominate Draws, Showcase Balanced Attack as CNU Women's Lacrosse Tops Randolph-Macon, 13-11

ASHLAND, Va. -- Meaghan Galvin established a new career-high with 11 draw controls and was one of four Captains to register multiple goals as the Christopher Newport women's lacrosse team took down Randolph-Macon, 13-11, during a non-conference battle on Tuesday evening at Day Field.

Controlling possession throughout the contest, Galvin stepped up with a tremendous effort. In a battle featuring two of the nation's top-20 active career leaders in draw controls, Galvin got the best of her counterpart as she secured 11 draws, including two crucial victories in the waning moments of the contest. Overall, her 11 draw controls marked the second-highest single-game total in program history, falling just one shy of the record set by Kristyn Hankins almost exactly 10 years ago against Shenandoah on March 11, 2007.

Along with her work on the draw, Galvin also led CNU with five points, including four goals. Colleen Bourgal and Sarah Culver also added a pair of tallies in the first half, while Erin Callahan struck twice in the second stanza to help thwart a Randolph-Macon comeback bid.

With the victory, Christopher Newport improves to 4-3 on the season. The setback drops Randolph-Macon to 3-2.

In the first half, the Captains jumped on the board quickly. Flashing some defense first, Culver put pressure on a Yellow Jacket before Katie Gaskin cut off a pass along the near sideline to gain possession. With the ball, Galvin found Bourgal, who sniped a rocket on the run to open the scoring less than two minutes into regulation. Moments later, Bourgal showed off her defensive chops and prevented another RMC clear before the offense struck again. This time, Culver drew the attention of two defenders near the top of the arc, which allowed Catie Chess to slip free, grab a pass, and bury a strike to steal a 2-0 lead.

After the Yellow Jackets managed to get on the board, Bourgal immediately responded as she secured a pass from Carly Wilson and burned a path towards the crease before unleashing another dagger to regain a two-goal lead.

Continuing to dominate possession, Galvin was nearly flawless on the draw, plucking the ball out of the air while jumping on any roller that managed to hit the turf. Meanwhile, on the defensive side, the Captains cut off a free-position attempt, Mackenzie Regen badgered an attacker around the back of the zone, and Gaskin forced a turnover to clamp down on an RMC rally. Minutes later, Regen caused another turnover to quiet Macon once again just as the CNU attack was finding its rhythm.

In the middle of the period, Chess used a slick feed across the zone to find Culver, who burst free for her first strike. Later, she added another goal after circling around a defender and sprinting right past two more before dropping a one-timer just inside the left pipe. Galvin also chipped in with a pair of goals during that surge, including a bullet off a free-position attempt to grab a 7-3 edge with 12 minutes left in the opening period.

Although the hosts were able to toss two more tallies on the board in the latter part of the half, Christopher Newport flashed its speed to add its final strike of the stanza. First, on the defensive side, Tess D'Arcy grabbed possession and cleared the ball with a blistering run as she blew right past three midfielders to get the ball to her attack. Seconds later, after working the ball around the back of the crease, Samantha Wettengel curled around a defender, wiggled free, and snapped off a screamer to help secure an 8-5 lead entering halftime.

Following the break, the Yellow Jackets managed to add two early goals, but Callahan matched them shot-for-shot. First, she took possession behind the cage, found an opening, and made a quick cut around the left pipe before dropping in a dart from the doorstep. Minutes later, she showed her range as she took a quick step before unleashing a lengthy missile from beyond the arc to give CNU a 10-7 edge.

Later, after RMC retaliated again, the Captains showed their patience and went to work on the clock. After methodically working the ball around the zone for over four minutes, Galvin took possession, danced around the pipe, and punched home her third goal to push the lead back up to three at 11-8.

Continuing the back and forth affair, the hosts added another goal before Kaitlyn Ready made a clutch save on the next possession. Minutes later, after cutting more time off the clock, Galvin struck again as she shook off a bruising hit in the interior before adding another pointblank score to stretch Christopher Newport's advantage back to three with eight minutes remaining in regulation.

With time quickly becoming an ally, Galvin did her best to keep the ball in the Captains' hands. In the final five minutes, she added two more draw controls, winning the first one cleanly after snatching the floater out of the air before battling through a scrum to pick up her 11th with three minutes left. Meanwhile, Jordan Hayes also added a little more breathing room after driving home a shot to nail down a 13-10 advantage.

Later, after Macon responded once again, Julia Golden collected the ensuing draw before Regen, D'Arcy, and Lindsay Weaver pieced together a three-man weave on the defensive side of midfield to run off the final few seconds and secure the victory.

Overall, Christopher Newport held a 31-14 advantage in shots, while Randolph-Macon led the way in ground balls, 17-14. However, the Captains absolutely dominated the draw as the visitors won 21 of the 26 battles, including Galvin's historic night. D'Arcy also picked up four draw controls, while Chess and Golden added a pair. Weaver also forced two turnovers for CNU, and Bourgal collected a team-high three ground balls.

Christopher Newport will return to action on Saturday at 1 p.m. when the Captains open up Capital Athletic Conference action at Marymount.
