ATLANTA, Ga. - The 13th-ranked Christopher Newport softball team won two games Saturday to run its winning streak to nine straight. The Captains defeated Emory University by scores of 7-5 and 8-5 to improve to 9-1 on the season.

CNU pulled out the opener thanks to three runs in the top of the seventh inning. Freshman Grace Wild doubled in senior Jenna Sprinkle and junior Rachael Payne to put the Captains ahead, 6-5, and senior Brittney Walters tacked on another run with a sacrifice fly to provide the 7-5 final.

Freshman Aubrey Bates improved to 3-0 with the win in relief of senior starter Tara Heatwole . Bates pitched the final three frames, allowing just one hit and one unearned run.

In the nightcap, the Captains recorded an 8-5 triumph. CNU jumped to an early lead with three first inning runs, and then added three more in the third to take a commanding 6-0 advantage.

Wild, who drove in three runs in the opener, knocked in two more in game two. She finished the day four-for-seven with five runs batted in. Sprinkle posted four hits in seven trips in the twin bill.

Starter Maiven McKnight went the distance to improve to 3-0 on the season. McKnight allowed four earned runs and scattered eight hits for the Captains.
