ATLANTA, Ga. - Christopher Newport and Emory University concluded a four-game weekend series Sunday, with the teams splitting a pair of games. CNU, ranked 13th in the nation, ended up taking three of four from the eighth-ranked Eagles.
Keith Parr's Captains had a nine-game winning streak snapped in the opener, an 8-3 Emory victory. CNU's defense suffered a letdown, committing six errors in the first game. Only two of eight runs given up by CNU starter
Tara Heatwole were earned over four and a third innings, and the senior lefty fell to 3-2 on the season.
In the nightcap, freshman starter
Aubrey Bates again was masterful, going the distance in a 2-1 Christopher Newport triumph. Bates allowed just three hits and one run in seven frames and improved to 4-0 to start her freshman season.
The Captains scored single runs in the first and third innings and Bates allowed only a single run in the fifth inning to the Eagles. Senior first baseman
Jenna Sprinkle drove in both runs for the Captains with a single and a sacrifice fly, and senior
Rachael Shiflett and junior
Leah Andrews both tripled in the second game.
Freshman
Calah Savage continued her hot hitting for CNU, going four-for-seven in the doubleheader. The Captains recorded 17 hits in the twin bill, but stranded 16 runners, eight in each game.
Sunday's split leaves Emory with a 10-6 record. Christopher Newport is now 10-2, and the Captains will continue play in Georgia, heading to Demorest to take on Piedmont. The Tuesday doubleheader will start at 1:00 p.m.
Christopher Newport returns home to host Virginia Wesleyan in a Sunday doubleheader at Captains Park.
