ORANGE, Calif. -- The 27th-ranked Christopher Newport men's tennis team cruised to an 8-1 win at Chapman University on Sunday afternoon, sweeping all six singles matches against the Panthers. Sophomore
Nicholas Ruzicka clinched the match at No. 6 singles, and also picked up a win in doubles play with partner
Michael Dodd.
The Captains got out an an early 2-1 lead after doubles, with a couple of 8-4 wins at No. 2 and No. 3. Ruzicka and Dodd improved to 2-1 together at No. 3 doubles, taking down Lem Kamemoto and Darrus Lee. In the No. 2 matchup,
William Trang and
Andy Mason won by the same score against their foes.Â
Christopher Newport made quick work of Chapman in singles play, getting straight victories in all six matchups. Ruzicka clinched the match at No. 6, earning another win over Kamemoto (6-1, 6-3).Â
At No. 5,
Arttu Fiva captured his 57th career win and continued his climb up the all-time wins list at CNU. He defeated Lee (6-3, 6-2) and is now just one victory shy of tying CNU Hall of Famer John Mouring for sixth in career wins with 58 singles victories.Â
David Reed was the only player that was pushed, as he needed a second set tiebreaker to get by Charlie Werman (6-1, 7-6 (5)). Nationally-ranked
Justin Cerny downed Josh Sarsfield at No. 2 (6-4, 6-4), while rookies
Andy Mason and
Dominic Lacombe also captured wins in their bouts.Â
CNU is off Monday but will return to action on Tuesday against Cal Lutheran at 2:00 pm.Â
