ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. -- The 28th-ranked Christopher Newport men's tennis team sailed away to a 9-0 shutout victory on the road Wednesday, taking down St. Mary's College of Maryland (6-6, 0-2) in Capital Athletic Conference action. The Captains improve to 7-7 overall with a 1-1 mark in CAC play, sweeping through both singles and doubles.
CNU dropped just three games in the three pro-set wins in doubles play, taking a dominant 3-0 advantage into singles. Juniors
Justin Cerny and
David Reed shut out their opponents at No. 1 doubles, 8-0, capturing the win over Connor McKissick and Jonathan Gorel.
At No. 2, senior
Michael Dodd and sophomore
Nicholas Ruzicka won, 8-1, and rookie tandem
Dominic Lacombe and
Andy Mason won, 8-3, at No. 3 doubles.
In singles action, the Captains lineup saw sophomore
Alex Johnson pick up his second career start, and subsequent win. Johnson played at No. 6 singles against Zach Talamonti, picking up the victory by a final score of 6-2, 6-0. Dodd also got his first start of the season, earning the win at No. 5 singles against Jack Brandenburg (6-0, 6-1).
The rest of CNU's wins came, in order 1-4:
Justin Cerny over Ethan Garren (6-3, 6-2);
Andy Mason over Connor McKissick (6-1, 6-1);
Dominic Lacombe over Ron Stith (6-0, 6-0); and
Nicholas Ruzicka over James Loftis (6-1, 6-0).
The Christopher Newport men will close out the regular season home slate this weekend as they host Penn State Harrisburg and York (Pa.) on Saturday, April 1. The match against the Lions starts at 10:00 am, followed by a 1:00 pm start against York College. CNU will then finish the regular season with five straight matches on the road.
