NEWPORT NEWS, Va. --
Riding a five-game winning streak, the Christopher Newport women's lacrosse team will put its recent roll on the line on Wednesday at 4 p.m. when the squad hosts 16th-ranked Mary Washington in a crucial Capital Athletic Conference contest at Captains Turf Field.

Entering the midweek bout, CNU sits at 8-3 overall with a 2-0 mark in league action. Meanwhile, Mary Washington is 7-4 with a 1-2 record in the CAC.

For those fans unable to make it to the game, live stats and a video stream of the action will be available at CNUsports.com. Direct links to both features can be found at the top of this release and on the CNU schedule page.

A LOOK AT THE CAPTAINS

Christopher Newport will get its third shot at a nationally-ranked opponent this year with Wednesday's match-up against the 16th-ranked Eagles. Earlier this season, CNU dropped a 7-5 decision to Washington & Lee, who is currently ranked fourth in the nation, before a 19-10 setback against Catholic, who is 10th. No. 7 York (Pa.) and No. 13 Salisbury also loom on the upcoming schedule as the Captains have home dates with both squads in April.

Entering the key match-up, CNU is on a five-game tear, including back-to-back double-digit victories over Southern Virginia and Shenandoah. During the winning streak, Meaghan Galvin has been honored twice as the CAC Offensive Player of the Week and leads the squad with 24 points, 12 assists, and 42 draw controls. Meanwhile, Sarah Culver has also scored a team-high 14 times during the past five games, while Catie Chess and Erin Callahan have 14 points apiece.

Overall this season, Galvin ranks second in the NCAA with 70 draw controls, sixth with 30 assists, and seventh with 56 points. Culver is also 24th in the country with 31 goals. As a team, the Captains rank 26th in the nation with a .518 free-position percentage. Galvin and Culver are tied for the team-lead with nine free-position goals apiece, and Lindsay Weaver is a perfect 4-for-4 from the eight-meter arc.

SCOUTING THE EAGLES

Mary Washington enters Wednesday with a 1-2 mark in league action but has faced a challenging slate so far, dropping a 9-7 decision to No. 13 Salisbury and a 10-6 setback at No. 7 York (Pa.). In fact, all four of the Eagles' losses this year have come against nationally-ranked opponents after also falling to No. 4 Washington & Lee, 5-4, and No. 12 Messiah, 7-6.

The Eagles have been led this year by a suffocating defensive unit that has limited the opposition to 5.09 goals per game. That rate is the 14th lowest in the NCAA. The squad also boasts a .579 save percentage, which ranks 12th nationally.

On an individual level, Hannah Ashby is 15th in the country with a .570 save percentage while also sporting a 5.74 goals-per-game average. Meanwhile, Kirsten Littlefield ranks fourth in the CAC with 14 caused turnovers, and Emily Mott is right behind her with 13. On the offensive end, Mackenzie Maguire has a team-high 25 goals and 33 points. Paige Childers also ranks fifth in the conference with 30 draw controls.

SERIES HISTORY

Mary Washington and CNU have met 15 times with the Eagles holding a 14-1 edge in the all-time series. UMW has won the previous two meetings, including a 12-4 victory in Fredericksburg last season. During that contest, Galvin led the Captains with three points, including a pair of goals. However, the hosts controlled possession throughout the contest, claiming 12 of the 18 draws, including five by Childers. Holly Hudson also added a hat-trick for UMW.

UP NEXT

Following Wednesday's action, Christopher Newport will remain at home on Saturday for a 1 p.m. battle with Frostburg State. Prior to the game, the Captains will hold their annual Senior Day festivities.
