A LOOK AT THE CAPTAINS
Christopher Newport has been dominant on the draw this year and currently ranks ninth in the NCAA with 134 draw controls. Leading the way,
Meaghan Galvin has 60 draws of her own, which places her third in the country. The All-American established a new single-game program record with 13 draws on Thursday against Southern Virginia and now owns Christopher Newport's single-game, season, and career draw control records.
Along with her work on the draw, Galvin also ranks seventh in the NCAA with 25 assists and eighth with 49 points. Meanwhile,
Sarah Culver also ranks 19th in the country - and second in the CAC - with 28 goals.
In addition to the top offensive threats, 17 other Captains have already scored a goal this year and 11 have four or more.
Catie Chess sits third on the team with 17 goals, while
Erin Callahan and
Carly Wilson have 16 points apiece. Wilson has been one of the squad's top facilitators with 12 assists, including two against the Knights in her last outing.
Meanwhile, on the other side of the field,
Tess D'Arcy and
Mackenzie Regen are tied for the team lead with nine caused turnovers, and
Kaitlyn Ready has a .443 save percentage and an 8.61 goals-against-average. The freshman has allowed fewer than six goals in five of her eight appearances, including a 14-save showcase at Stevens last Sunday.
SCOUTING THE HORNETS
Shenandoah is very familiar with CAC members as the squad has already squared off with Mary Washington, Frostburg State, and Marymount this year. In their last outing, the Hornets fell at Marymount, 10-7. SU scored the first four goals of the game, but the Saints responded and struck seven times in the second half to seal the victory.
The Hornets have been led by a strong defensive unit, which has caused an average of 12 turnovers per game. That rate currently ranks 30th in the NCAA. Brittany Arndt leads the squad with 17 caused turnovers, while Annie McCorry has eight to go along with nine goals. Meanwhile, on the back end, freshmen Madeleine Card and Kiera Lane have split time in goal while combining for a .531 save percentage and an 8.83 goals-against-average.
Offensively, SU has been paced by Jordyn Miller, who has 10 goals. Jacque Hemler also has 10 points for the Hornets, while Nikki Zerna has dished out five assists.
SERIES HISTORY
Former USA South rivals, CNU and Shenandoah have met 19 times with the Captains holding a 17-2 edge in the series. Last year, Christopher Newport recorded an 18-9 victory in Winchester behind a five-goal outburst by Galvin. Chess and Culver also scored four times for the Captains, while McCorry contributed four strikes for SU.
UP NEXT
Following Saturday's action, Christopher Newport will remain at home for a 4 p.m. match-up with Mary Washington on March 29.
